Local man killed after vehicle lands upside down in creek

VAN BUREN TWP. — A Brown County man was killed in a single-vehicle crash last week on State Road 135 South.

Deputies with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, an Indiana Conservation Officer and EMS were dispatched to the crash in the 7300 block of 135 South around 8 p.m. on Dec. 22.

When first responders arrived, they found a black Dodge Ram truck upside down in the creek, according to the accident report by Sgt. Chad Williams.

First responders attempted to get the driver — 53-year-old Gary Shafer — out of the truck, but he was trapped inside, according to the accident report.

The truck was then turned over by emergency personnel and Shafer was deceased inside.

A witness at the scene said Shafer left their home around 8 p.m. The witness and another individual then left the home around 8:20 p.m. and noticed the east side of the wooden bridge was broken. They called 911 after seeing the truck in the creek.

Police reported that it appeared Shafer drove off the side of the bridge and his truck turned over before resting in the creek.
