Spring break day camp at the Y
The Brown County YMCA will host a Spring Break Day Camp for children in kindergarten through sixth grade from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 to 18.
The weekly cost is $100 per child and $80 per additional sibling. The daily cost is $25 per child and $20 per additional sibling. There is a free and reduced lunch option for $75 per child and $60 per additional sibling.
Children should bring a swim suit, a towl and a packed lunch.

Deescalation workshop scheduled
The Brown County Health Department will host Verbal Judo, a grant-funded deescalation workshop, on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15 and 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East.
Participants will learn how to increase workplace safety by decreasing the chance of workplace violence and learn how to defuse verbal conflict.
The class is free to any county employee courtesy of a grant from the Smithville Charitable Foundation. The class will be open to the community to enroll after Feb. 15.
The instructor is Mike “Ziggy” Siegried, a speaker who spent 26 years working as a full-time peace officer prior to becoming the COO of the Verbal Judo Institute. Siegfried is a court recognized use-of-force expert and a published author in Police Magazine, the FBI National Academy Associate Magazine, Police Recruit Magazine and Campus Security Magazine.
The class is free to all Brown County employees. The class will be open to the community to enroll after Feb. 15.

Activities, events at library
The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, will host several activities and events this month.
“No School, Library’s Cool!” program will happen on March 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Drop-in programming will be available for kids and teens to celebrate National Craft Month.
Novel Bunch Book Club will meet on March 16 at 2 p.m. They will discuss “Cold Sassy Tree” by Olive Ann Burns.
Cordry Sweetwater Bookies Book Club will meet on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cordry-Sweetwater Branch, 8751 Nineveh Road. They will discuss “The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr” by Susan Holloway Scott.
Storytelling with Martha will occur on March 17 at 1 p.m. Kids 13 and under can enjoy Fables and Folktales Week followed by St. Patrick’s Day activities.
ATLAS will happen on March 17 and 24 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Games, crafts and snacks will be available for kids and teens grade six and up.
History Hang will take place on March 19 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Visitors can celebrate Women’s History Month in the Children’s Area.
Tolkien Reading Day is March 25. There will be a “Put-and-Take Tolkien Book Swap.”
On March 26 at 2 p.m., Indiana University’s Dr. Janine Giordano Drake will present “Indiana Women and the Suffrage Movement”. All are welcome to attend.
BCPL Craft Club will meet on March 30 at 6 p.m. The theme will be Faux Fabergé Eggs. All materials are supplied. Crafts are for adults and teens 13 and up. For more information, visit browncountylibrary.info/craft-club.
The library is also partnering with United Way of Monroe County to provide free federal and Indiana tax preparation for qualified residents.

Participants can pick up a free tax prep packet at the library. The completed packet can then be returned to the library.
A volunteer certified tax preparer will complete your tax forms and schedule an in-person appointment where you will approve and sign your tax returns.
The lower level parking lot will be closed until May 20 for construction of the power-producing solar panels in that area.
Free legal aid phone clinic set this month
Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, March 22 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.
The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.
Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on March 22 between noon and 2 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.
Information session for caretakers set
Thrive Alliance will hold a virtual information session for caretakers on March 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Volunteer Advocated for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults aims to increase an individual’s quality of life by making decisions that reflect their own choices. The VASIA Program recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to provide support and advocacy to those who are unable to care for themselves.

Recycling, shredding days announced
The Brown County Solid Waste Management District, 176 Old State Road 46, has announced the dates for tire recycling, electronics recycling and document shredding.
On Friday March 25, the Recycle Center will have tire recycling. The event takes place in the far back of the property close to the Brown County Fairgrounds. Recycling will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular size car and light truck tires are free. Any tires with rims will cost extra. See the complete fee schedule at www.browncountyrecycles.org. There will be no limit to the number of tires that can be recycled.

Electronic recycling day will be on Saturday, April 9 from 8 a.m. to noon, or until the trucks are full, at the back of the Recycling Center property. TV sets and computer monitors will be $20 to recycle.
Document shredding day will be on Saturday, April 9 from 9 to 11:45 a.m. in the front lot of the Recycle Center.
Community Foundation upcoming events
The Brown County Community Foundation recenently introduced the Organizations for Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) program, which aims to enrich the skills of local nonprofits.
ONE recently hosted a Zoom networking event that included a review of the results from a nonprofit survey from 2021. The next networking event will be a breakfast at Rafter’s at the Seasons Lodge in April.
A two-day training class for small nonprofits led by the IUPUI Fund Raising School and the Lily Family School of Philanthropy will occur on April 26 and May 24.

Local Bible studies
Multiple Bible studies are available for the coming months.
Laura Stuart and Deeper Truth Ministries will offer the women’s Bible study every Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Nashville Christian Church Lifehouse, 216 S. Van Buren St. The study will continue weekly through April 12.
“The Forgotten Jesus: How Western Christians Should Follow an Eastern Rabbi” by Robby Gallaty, will be studied.

All people are invited to come and learn more about Community Bible Study, an in-depth interdenominational study.
The study began in 1975 and is now available in 78 languages all around the world. The intent is for the Nashville community to be an in-person remote core group as part of the Bloomington Coed Class. The organization is planning three informational meetings that will meet on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. for one hour at The Chapel at the Cornerstone Inn, 54 E. Franklin St.
The remote core group will continue to meet on this same day and time following the informational meetings.

Brown County women are invited to attend Joy in the Morning, a non-denominational Bible study for women, at the Bean Blossom Community Church, 5046 State Road 135 North, on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. The next meeting is March 6.
Coffee and fellowship begins at 10 a.m. Childcare is provided and transportation is available if needed. High school 50th reunion
Brown County High School class of 1972 will have a 50 year reunion this year.
To celebrate this milestone, there will be a casual event on Friday, Sept. 9 followed by a dinner on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Both events will take place at 1641 Oak Grove Road. The classes of 1971 and 1973 are also invited to attend.

Community foundation grants application open
Applications are currently open for the 2022 Brown County Community Foundation Community grants.
In 2021, the community foundation distributed over $92,000 in grants to local nonprofits and charitable organizations.
The community foundation has funded grants supporting the arts, education, social services, health and the environment. They support charitable organizations that support community needs to help build a better Brown County. Housing was added as an area of focus for grants in 2021.
Applications must be submitted online and all required documents can be found at browncountygives.org/bcgives/grants.
Directions should be read before completing the application. Applications are due by March 7 at 4 p.m.

Project Lifesaver applications open
TRIAD and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department have announced that applications are now open for Project Lifesaver.
Those with loved ones at risk of wandering would obtain a personalized wrist-watch sized radio transmitter fitted to their wrist that would be used to locate them if they go missing.
This program is available to any Brown County resident due to a grant support from the Brown County Community Foundation and its partners.

Counseling service available 24/7
A free mental health crisis hotline is available through Be Well Indiana.
The Be Well Indiana Crisis Hotline is confidential and available 24 hours a day. Individuals who call the crisis helpline can seek support for several distress reactions including anxiety or fearfulness, issues with sleep, isolation, intrusive thoughts, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, fatigue and sadness.
A trained counselor will speak with callers and refer them to additional crisis counseling or mental health resources if needed.
Individuals can call 211 to reach the helpline.
