Activities, events on deck at library

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, will host several activities and events this month.

Novel Bunch Book Club will meet on April 20 at 2 p.m. They will discuss “The Bookshop of Yesterdays” by Amy Myerson.

At the Library After School (ATLAS) will meet at the Cordry-Sweetwater branch, 8751 Nineveh Road, on April 20 at 5 p.m. Crafts and activities will be available for kids grades 1 through 5.

Cordry-Sweetwater Bookies Book Club will meet on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss “The Book of Lost Names” by Kristin Harme.

Pre-K Earth Day Fun will be on April 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Toddlers and preschoolers can participate in hands on Earth Day activities. Registration is required at browncountylibrary.info/pre-k-earth-day.

ATLAS will happen on April 21 and 28 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Brown County branch. Games, crafts and snacks will be available for children grades 6 and up.

Local author and historian Rachel Berenson Perry will present “Frank V. Dudley and the Indiana Dunes” on April 21 at 7 p.m. Perry will give a presentation on Dudley, the northern Indiana landscape painter known as the “Painter of the Dunes.” Copies of Perry’s latest book will also be available for purchase and signing. BCPL Craft Club will meet on April 27 at 6 p.m. Adults and teens 13 and older will make Crepe paper spring flowers. All tools and materials are supplied. Registration is required at browncountylibrary.info/craft-club.

A virtual poetry reading with poet Ross Gay will take place on April 28 at 6 p.m. Those interested will have three ways to watch: in the library, on Zoom or on Facebook Live. Visit browncountylibrary.info/ross-gay for registration details.

The Friends of the Library Annual Plant Sale will occur on April 29 from 2 to 6 p.m. and April 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A large selection of plants, as well as trees will be available. Cash or checks will be accepted. The Friends are also accepting donations of yard art and gently used garden tools to be included in the sale. The lower level parking lot will be closed until May 20 for construction of the power-producing solar panels in that area.

Annual wildflower event this weekend

The 37th Annual Wildflower Foray is returning to Brown County on Friday, April 22 and will feature a variety of outdoor events through Sunday, April 24.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road, with moderate and rugged hikes at Selma Steele Nature Preserve.

The event will also feature guided hikes in the Brown County State Park, bird watching at Stone Head Nature Preserve, informative gardening talks and more.

There are also scheduled events happening at various Monroe County locations, including Kent Farm, Allens Creek State Recreation Area and Morgan-Monroe State Forest.

Registration is required for some events and due by Wednesday, April 20.

Earth Day celebration scheduled at YMCA

The Brown County Food and Farm Council will host an Earth Day celebration at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This community event will feature demonstrations, exhibitors, door prizes and activities for children and adults.

The Y’s community garden will also host special demonstrations and provide a sneak peak of more opportunities to come this growing season.

Free legal aid phone clinic set this month

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, April 26 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on April 26 between noon and 2 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

The next Legal Aid Phone Clinic is on Tuesday, May 10 with the same registration requirements and time frame.

Family support group to meet this month

A meeting of the Compassion Friends of South Central Indiana will happen Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St.

Compassion Friends is a national organization for families that have experienced the loss of a child. Group meetings are for all regardless of cause of death, circumstances or age of the child.

Parking will be available in front and behind the church.

Drive-thru pantry planned this month

MORGANTOWN — A drive-thru pop-up food pantry will happen on April 27 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., or while supplies last, in the Unity Baptist Church parking lot, 7361 Spearsville Road.

The pop-up was rescheduled from Feb. 2 due to inclement weather. For questions or if delivery is needed, call the Brown County COAD Hotline at 812-988-0001.

Those in need of a ride to the pantry can call Brown County Access at 812-988-0185.

There are also other food pantries in the county who are available to help:

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry: Mondays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon.

Salvation Army Food Pantry: Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

North Salem United Methodist: First Thursday of each month.

Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen: Hot meals daily, 4 to 6 p.m.

St. David’s Episcopal Church Giving Box: Emergency food box available 24/7

The Pentecostals of Nashville: Thursdays, 5 to 7 p.m.

Thrive Alliance vendor fair

COLUMBUS — Thrive Alliance is sponsoring a free vendor fair on Wednesday, April 27 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Donnor Center, 739 22nd Street in Columbus.

The vendors will represent a range of providers offering products catering to mostly older populations, those planning for their later years, family caregivers and the disabled.

Antique tractor, truck show next month

The Brown County Historical Society, 90 E. Gould St., will host the first annual Hambone Antique Tractor and Truck Show on May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Pioneer Village.

Participants should arrive and line up between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Judging will occur at 11:30 a.m., with awards at 1 p.m.

A lunch will be provided by the Pioneer Women and the Historical Society. Raffle tickets for the 2022 quilt will also be available for purchase.

Multiple local Bible studies

Over the next few months, multiple Bible studies will be available to residents.

All ladies are invited to join a Bible study of the “Invincible” DVD series by Robert Jeffress, which will happen every Tuesday to May 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rising Hope Baptist Church, 1267 Old State Road 46. Personal study guides and Bibles will be provided. Those interested should call 812-720-1570 and leave a message.

All people are invited to visit and learn more about Community Bible Study, a caring, in-depth, interdenominational study. The Nashville Remote Core Group is a part of the Bloomington Coed Class. The Nashville group meets Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Chapel at The Cornerstone Inn, 54 E. Franklin St. The current study will end April 19 and then resume again in mid-September. Long-term care seminar planned

WestPoint Financial Group will host a free lunch seminar about long-term care planning on Wednesday, April 27 at noon at Brown County Library, 205 Locust Lane.

Guest speakers are Clara Hyun Joo Stanley and Joe Knoth, WestPoint financial advisors.

More practical cases and option plans will be discussed. A free lunch will be provided by Johnny’s Grub To Go and door prizes will be available.

Project Lifesaver applications open

TRIAD and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department have announced that applications are now open for Project Lifesaver.

Those with loved ones at risk of wandering would obtain a personalized wrist-watch sized radio transmitter fitted to their wrist that would be used to locate them if they go missing.

This program is available to any Brown County resident due to a grant support from the Brown County Community Foundation and its partners.

High school band seeking information

The Brown County High School Band is seeking information from the community as they prepare for their spring concert in May.

The band will honor those in the community whose lives were lost to COVID-19 with a dedicated song and a picture slideshow during the spring concert on May 12. The concert will take place in the auditorium at the high school.
