Police Blotter: Meth found during traffic stop, man arrested; Man charged with residential entry

Seymour man faces felony for possession of methamphetamine

A Seymour man, 20-year-old Christopher Stout, faces a Level 6 felony for possession of methamphetamine after a traffic stop in September.

On Sept. 7 Indiana State Trooper Matthew Hatchett observed a vehicle with a damaged license plate traveling eastbound on State Road 46 East past the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.

Hatchett caught up to the vehicle to see if the plate was valid. According to the affidavit, the license plate appeared to be unreadable. Due to this infraction, Hatchett conducted a traffic stop.

After stopping the vehicle, Hatchett spoke with the driver and Stout, who was the passenger. The driver provided a license but Stout had no identification, so he provided his name and date of birth.

After conducting a BMV check for their information, Hatchett determined that Stout had an active failure to appear warrant from Jackson County. Hatchett requested assistance at the scene, then returned to the vehicle and asked Stout to step out, which he did.

Hatchett told Stout that he had an active warrant and placed him in handcuffs, then conducted a search of Stout’s person which did not yield anything.

While waiting for the warrant to be confirmed, another officer, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Griggs, arrived on the scene. Griggs asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle, which he denied.

Hatchett then asked Griggs to have the driver exit the vehicle so he could conduct a free air sniff around the vehicle with his K-9 Axe. While conducting the free air sniff, Axe responded to the presence of the odor of illegal drugs rear passenger door.

Hatchett asked the driver if he wanted to explain anything being inside the vehicle. According to Hatchett, the driver said to his knowledge there was nothing illegal inside of the car.

While Hatchett conducted a search of the vehicle, he located approximately two grams of what he recognized to be methamphetamine. He seized the evidence and interviewed both individuals. Stout told Hatchett the methamphetamine was his and the driver repeatedly denied any knowledge of the methamphetamine.

The driver was released from the scene with a warning for improper display for the license plate. Stout was booked into Brown County Jail for possession of methamphetamine and an active arrest warrant for failure to appear.

County man facing residential entry charge

A Nashville man, 67-year-old Steven Campbell, was charged with a Level 6 felony for residential entry after an incident in October.

On Oct. 4, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputies Kyle Minor, Josh Bales and Nashville Patrolman Dylan Smock responded to a call made by Campbell, who stated someone had broken into his home on Salt Creek Road.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Campbell advised law enforcement that after his home was broken into, the intruders chased him to his neighbor’s house, where Campbell kicked the front door down to call 911.

When the officers arrived at the scene, Campbell exited his neighbor’s residence and explained the situation to them. Deputy Minor advised Campbell to sit on the porch while he contacted the owner of the home Campbell had broken into.

Bales spoke with Campbell on the porch while Smock and Minor entered the residence to check the welfare of the homeowner.

After contact was established, the homeowner assessed the damage, and then asked Campbell “what was wrong with him,” according to the affidavit. Campbell again stated he was being chased and added he would fix the door.

Minor photographed the damage to the door. According to the affidavit, there were footprints on the door, the trim and door jamb were damaged and the latch was located on the ground. Campbell demonstrated how he kicked the door in to Bales.

The officers gathered the homeowner’s information and assisted her with the door. Campbell was placed under arrest and booked into Brown County Jail.
