Students welcome to enter essay contest

The League of Women Voters of Brown County are once again sponsoring an essay contest for local middle and high school students from public, private, or home-schooled classes.

Essay entries must be received by midnight Thursday, March 30, 2023. To highlight the issue of voting in our democracy, and to foster an exercise in developing, defending, and explaining a viewpoint, League members have worked with teachers to select the following topic prompts.

For grades 6-8 the prompt is:

“George Washington was right—political parties are bad for representative government.” Agree or disagree?

For grades 9-12 the prompt is:

“Voting should be made mandatory, like jury duty, so that every eligible person participates.” Agree or disagree?

The essays will be judged anonymously by retired teachers, with cash prizes awarded in each grade category; $250 first place, $150 second place, and $75 third place. To get full information and an entry packet, go to www.lwvbrowncounty.org home page and scroll down to “LWVBC Announces Third Annual Essay Contest.”

To honor its recently deceased charter member, the contest is titled “The Janet Kramer Essay Contest.”
