Leroy E. “Pete” Schrougham, age 93 passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 27, 2024 at Brown County Health & Living Community in Nashville. He was a lifelong resident of Brown County.Pete was born May 25, 1930 on Clay Lick Road in Brown County, to his parents, the late Omar and Alta (Clark) Schrougham. He attended Helmsburg High School and went on to serve as a Private First Class with the Company A 32nd Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a Purple Heart recipient and was honorably discharged on December 19, 1952.Pete attended Goshen Church in Brown County. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6195 in Nashville, where he served as Past Commander, Charter member of the American Legion Post 13 and an original member of the Brown County Honor Guard. Pete was a proud veteran and very community minded. He enjoyed volunteering with TRIAD, Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans Association in Indianapolis. Pete, along with his good friend Denzil Ford, are credited with establishing the first 911 system for Brown County.He enjoyed bowling, tending to his yard and riding his mower. Pete was a fan of Indiana Men’s Basketball and NASCAR, with his favorite driver being Jimmie Johnson. He was also a fan of old western movies and books by Louis L’Amour. Pete will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for his love of family.Besides his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Doris J. (Rose) Schrougham, whom he married on September 7, 1951 in Bloomington. He was also preceded in death by a son in law, Phillip Jackson; grandson, Michael Jackson; and siblings, Eva Ford, Faye Johnson, Ralph, Clovis, Raymond, Warren & Merrill Schrougham.Pete is survived by his daughters, Pamela Jackson of Nashville and Gail (husband, Ken) Ypparila of Thousand Oaks, CA; brother, Max (Veda) Schrougham of Trafalgar; grandchildren, Brandon (wife, Missy) Jackson of Franklin, Gemma (husband, Mark) Ypparila-Cashman of Marblehead, MA; great grandchildren, Chandler (fiancè, Kat Trayser) Jackson of Colorado, Shea (boyfriend, Carlos Shipley) Jackson of Colorado & Alex Jackson, Nick and Kyle Wicker all of Franklin, and Rose & Grace Cashman both of Marblehead, MA. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Thursday, February 1st at the Seasons Conference Center in Nashville to remember both Pete and his late wife Doris. A visitation for friends and family will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a lunch from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Darrel Miller officiating. Military Rites will be presented by the Brown County Honor Guard and the United States Army.
