Letter: County sign ordinance: ‘Leave it as it was’

To the editor:

No, the suggested changes to the sign ordinance are not a good idea. Over the years, talking to old-timers, they would say, “Leave it as it was.” Tourists to Nashville would say: “I like Nashville any time of the year, but especially at Christmas — with the white lights outlining houses and glittering on trees. It is Christmas magic!”

I am wondering whether those who propose lit signs for the Maple Leaf do not understand that any change to the sign ordinance will affect all of Brown County. Do they not understand that this will open the door to lit signs in Old Town Nashville with its 70 historic buildings also at Christmastime? Or maybe do they just not care.

When old-timers said to me, “Why don’t newcomers not just leave it as it was,” I explained to them that “to leave it as it was” we need very good planning and good ordinances to protect Brown County’s beauty and charm. Only sound planning and strict adherence to well-thought-out ordinances can assure that it will stay the way it was.
