State Health Commissioner Kristina Box, M.D., FACOG, will address priority issues of the state department of health, which include infant mortality, the opioid epidemic, smoking cessation, obesity/chronic disease and emerging public health threats.

Box was appointed Indiana health commissioner by Governor Eric Holcomb in 2017, bringing to the position a passion for improving the health of Hoosiers beginning before birth. She has been a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist in Indianapolis for 30 years and has been involved in ongoing surgical medical missions to Haiti and Bolivia for more than a decade. She earned her undergraduate degree from Indiana University in Bloomington and her medical doctorate from the I.U. School of Medicine in Indianapolis. She and her husband of 35 years, David, a retired ophthalmologist, live in Indianapolis. They have four adult children.

Box has served as the physician lead for Community Health Women’s Service Line, building the first multi-disciplinary women’s center in the community health network and developing partnerships with children’s hospitals. She led efforts to ensure that low-income women receive needed health screenings. She served on the Indiana Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative, which works to reduce infant mortality and address neonatal abstinence syndrome, which arises from in-utero exposure to opioids.

Members of the community, especially those interested in learning about and helping with Rotary activities and projects, are welcome.
