Local gallery featuring work of Hopkins, Lowe

The Hoosier Artist Gallery, 45 S. Jefferson St., is featuring the art of Anabel Hopkins and Tom Lowe during June.

Hopkins is a skilled painter creating impressionistic landscapes and colorful abstracts. Her recent “fluid acrylic” paintings have gained much attention.

Lowe is an experienced scroll saw artist. He enjoys creating art that is both spiritual and nature-related. His puzzles are particularly popular with people of all ages.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

‘Make and Take’ event planned at Art Walk

Hoosier Artist Gallery is initiating a series of “make and take” art classes to raise money to support expenses. The first will take place Friday, June 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. during the Art Walk.

Visitors can drop in at any time during the evening and should complete their work within 15 minutes. With local artist and gallery member Anabel Hopkins, visitors will experience the process of fluid acrylic pouring by creating a painting on a 6-by-6-inch ceramic tile. Guests can select their style and colors under Hopkins’ guidance.

The cost is $10. All ages are welcome to participate. The event will be outside in a tent at the gallery’s east entrance.

Brown County Art Gallery June news

The Indiana Heritage Arts annual Exhibition & Sale will run from Saturday, June 8 through Saturday, June 22 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

The Artist Association Summer Show is on display now, with original works available for purchase, as well as cards, prints and small items in the gift shop.

A special exhibit of abstract art will be on display at the gallery, in conjunction with the Grunwald Gallery of Art, Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design, Indiana University Bloomington. The opening reception will take place Saturday, July 13 at 2 p.m., with a presentation by Grunwald Gallery of Art director Betsy Stirratt beginning at 3 p.m., discussing how abstract art relates to the representational art regularly featured at the gallery.

A wine and cheese reception will follow the program. Art students will be available to discuss their work. The exhibit will be open daily from Sunday, July 14 through Sunday, Aug. 4. and is presented in partnership with the Indiana University Center for Rural Engagement. $5 per person.

Dale Popovich’s watercolor workshop will take place Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15. Students will experience Popovich’s step-by-step instruction in transparent watercolor, exploring the beauty of nature and gaining a deeper understanding of the techniques, properties and tools of the medium.

Wayne Campbell will lead a two-day workshop in drawing and pastels Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11, working with live, clothed models and photos, using a method which he finds to be an easier way to draw and paint. Students will build a foundation map that takes minutes before each drawing.

Guild announces summer exhibitions, workshops

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., is planning summer exhibitions featuring new works from member artists as well as a special exhibition of past and present works featuring landscapes.

The summer exhibition and sale will run from June 7 to Aug. 18 with brand-new works from member artists. An opening reception will happen from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 28.

The guild also will host two workshops this year.

A two-day landscape painting workshop instructed by Pamela Chase Newell is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16. The Guild’s permanent collection will be used as studies. The cost is $247.50 for member artists and $275 for non-members. Lunch at two restaurants is also included in the price.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, Wyatt LeGrand and Larry Rudolech will teach an Upper Schooner Open Air workshop. Participants will spend a day painting the countryside on a property south of Nashville. All painting styles and levels are welcome. The price is $220.50 for members and $245 for non-members. A picnic lunch is included.

Adult art class starting at BETA in June

Beginning this month, local artist M.K. Watkins will teach an adult art class once a week for six weeks at the BETA (Brown County Enrichment for Teens) center, 175 S. Jefferson St.

The class will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays from June 12 through July 10. Class size is limited to 10 and registration is required. No experience is needed.

Brown County Inn hosting storytelling nights

The Brown County Radio Hour, in collaboration with the Nashville Arts & Entertainment Commission and the Brown County Inn, is presenting a Story Slam which will conclude on June 13. The topic will be “The Liar’s Bench.”

Each story must be true as the teller remembers it, about themselves, told without notes in front of the audience, and be 5 minutes or less in length.

The event will be recorded and presented as a podcast on the Brown County Radio Hour and the winner will have his or her story featured on an episode of the Brown County Hour on WFHB.

Guitar classes for adult students at BETA

Guitarist Jeff Foster is offering private lessons for adult students at the BETA (Brown County Enrichment for Teens) center, 175 S. Jefferson St., on Mondays.

Learn to sketch native plants at state park

Rachel Johnson will lead a program, “Sketching Indiana Native Plants,” at Brown County State Park on a series of Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 22, July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28.

The events are funded by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission as part of Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites for 2019.

Gallery to feature variety of artists through summer

Ascension Fine Arts, on the second floor at 61 W. Main St., will feature the works of various artists through June and July.

Works of Decatur artist Jerry Clifton will be on display Friday, June 21 through Tuesday, July 23. Clifton specializes in Intarsia wood art, a technique that uses varied shapes, sizes and species of wood to create a mosaic-like picture with the illusion of depth, using the natural color variations of the wood. Finished pieces can include hundreds of different pieces and take more than 60 hours to complete.

Painter Alana Judah will demonstrate her methods from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 28. Judah works in acrylics and enjoys painting landscapes and animals, including pet portraits. During the June Art Walk, she will paint in the gallery where her work is sold year-round.

The gallery will host a special showing of Brownstown resident Bill Bickers’ paintings from Friday, June 28 through Tuesday, July 23. Bickers was raised in Columbus and grew up with an appreciation of the design, color and texture of the local architecture. His abstract impressionist paintings are inspired by southern Indiana landscapes and the shapes and shades of everyday life. He paints in acrylics, frequently using a palette knife.

An artist’s reception will take place Friday, June 28 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Agriculture photo contest now open statewide

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is accepting submissions for the 12th Annual Indiana Agriculture Photo Contest. The contest is open to Indiana residents and serves to recognize the hard work and contributions of Hoosier farmers and the beauty of the state’s agricultural landscape.

Winners will be invited to attend a ceremony at the Indiana State Fair, where they will be recognized and receive certificates from Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler.

Contestants can submit up to five digital photos. Each must be taken within the state, accompanied by an entry form, and fall under one of the the following categories: agritourism, conservation, faces of agriculture or on the farm. Photos will be evaluated based on creativity, composition and category representation.

Brushless painting classes taught at winery

Local artist Anabel Hopkins has started “Pour ’n More,” a series of art classes centered on a technique of fluid acrylic pouring. This is a brushless form of abstract painting on canvas, tiles and other surfaces.

Hopkins will teach from 1 to 3 p.m. each first Saturday through Sept. 7 at Chateau Thomas Winery, 225 S. Van Buren St. in Coachlight Square. The next class will be July 6.

All materials and snacks will be provided; beverages will be sold. Participants will complete two projects under Hopkins’ guidance.

Register for two-day mixed media workshop in July

BELMONT — Dixie Ferrer will lead an Air Arts in the Parks workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

The workshop is two days of mixed media work inspired by a hike in the woods. Participants attend both sessions to work on one piece of art. The event is free with site admission thanks to grants from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Art Alliance Brown County to host showcase at Playhouse

The Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission (NAEC) and the Art Alliance Brown County (AABC) are sponsoring a special art show at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St. It will premiere at the Fingerstyle Guitar Competition Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28. The show will remain hanging through Monday, Sept. 30.

AABC members are welcome to present music-themed artwork in the show. The show is not juried officially, but selections may be made to accommodate the theme and space. Staff will be able to sell work with a 20-percent commission during the festival, with proceeds going toward the event. Works can be sold after the festival, but buyers will need to contact artists directly to make private arrangements for payment and pickup. No commission will be charged.

Works must be dropped off at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., between Sunday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 23. The guild is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Works shall be displayed in the Playhouse.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”

Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.
