Letter: Local Republican Party doesn’t claim county clerk

To the editor:

On Aug. 23, 2018, the Brown County Republican Central Committee voted to remove Kathy Grimes Smith, currently the clerk of courts for Brown County, Indiana, from her role as vice chairman of the central committee and from the Republican Party of Brown County. Ms. Smith refused to resign.

On Sept. 19, 2018, the Indiana Republican Party conducted a special meeting and called for a vote to remove Ms. Smith as required by Indiana Republican Party rules. Ms. Smith was removed as vice chairman for breach of confidence and trust by directly harming the integrity of the central committee.

Ms. Smith initiated the process to file for Brown County clerk without the support or endorsement of the Republican Central Committee or the Indiana Republican Party.

The Brown County Republican Central Committee formally disavowed their association with Ms. Smith prior to her being elected as the Brown County clerk and do not consider her to be a member of the Republican Party in good standing.

Mark Bowman, Brown County Republican Party chairman
