Police blotter for week of Oct. 14

Man arrested for driving while intoxicated

A 30-year-old Bloomington man was arrested Sept. 29 after callers reported someone driving recklessly on State Road 46 West.

When Brown County sheriff’s deputies Joshua Stargell and Jacob Gibson arrived at Speedway, they reported finding Logan Peters acting erratically and walking out of the parking lot.

Stargell activated his lights and hit his horn, but Peters continued to walk away, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Peters stopped at the First Merchants Bank ATM where Stargell approached him. Peters told Stargell that he had not seen him.

Nashville Patrolman Billy Bryant also arrived on scene.

According to the affidavit, witnesses told Stargell that Peters was passing multiple vehicles at once and driving down the center of the roadway.

Stargell went back to the ATM where Bryant was with Peters, who had taken off his shirt.

Police were trying to obtain a search warrant for operating a vehicle while intoxicated when Peters reportedly began to yell “at the top of his lungs,” according to the affidavit.

Gibson warned Peters that he would be charged with disorderly conduct for yelling.

Peters was taken to the Brown County jail, then to Columbus Regional Health for a blood draw. Gibson conducted a vehicle inventory search on Peters’ vehicle prior to it being towed and reported finding a hypodermic needle in the glove box.

On Sept. 30, Peters was charged with unlawful possession of a syringe, a Level 6 felony; operating a vehicle while intoxicated — endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor; operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor.

Edinburgh man faces felony charge after moped crash

A man from Edinburgh is facing a felony charge after a motorcycle accident on Hoover Road in August.

On Aug. 14, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Austin Schonfeld and Sgt. Chad Williams responded to a call regarding a motorcycle accident in the 5600 block of Hoover Road.

Upon arrival, officers observed a moped on the north side of the road that was significantly damaged, according to the incident narrative.

Schonfeld reported seeing a shirtless man, later identified as 48-year-old Gordon Hancock. He was covered in mud and sitting on top of a nearby hill, being tended to by the homeowner, according to the narrative.

Hancock advised he had missed the curve due to speeding, which caused him to run off the road.

Officers asked for Hancock’s identification. Officers were advised by dispatch that Hancock was a habitual traffic violator without an endorsement to operate a moped.

EMS arrived and evaluated Hancock, who refused transport to the hospital. He reportedly contacted his mother to pick him up from the scene.

Hancock was reportedly cited and released for operating a motor vehicle after being a habitual traffic offender, a Level 6 felony. He was charged in Brown Circuit Court on Sept. 25.
