Letter: A few questions for local elected officials

To the editor:

Why is it that I read that our property taxes are frozen when actually they go up every year? Mine does. How about yours?

Why is it that our commissioners and county council reps don’t hold district meetings to understand what the people they represent really want?

Why do they hold meetings at times when everybody is coming home from work, is still at work or eating supper?

Why does the county put tourists first instead of the people living here? The tourists will come. They love the people and rural areas.

Why does the county think they should be in the business of doing “business”? Their business is to do what the people want. After all, I think we pay them.

Why do the elected officials think we need to chop up Brown County in 1 1/2-acre lots?

Why do they think we need to be like everybody else and become a big city?

Why do they think it will be better with more money coming in? Progress sometimes is not measured by more houses and more “development.”

Why should we give more money to people who cannot stay within their own budget?

Why do you think that the people of this county are frustrated with their higher tax bills?

Why did they pass the sewer district without public input?

Why are they planning to spend millions on a justice center?

So I might sound like a 6-year-old asking his daddy “Why?” but it seems like that is the way we are treated. But the real truth is, you are not our daddy. We are not your 6-year-olds, and I think the people in Brown County are very smart “grown-ups.” And maybe if you ask us, we could probably solve a lot of the county’s “problems” and maybe save the citizens a lot of money in the years to come.

Thank you.
