Letter: Memories of Fred Lorenz and Gnaw Bone Camp

To the editor:

Fred Lorenz was my grandmother’s sister’s son. He purchased the Gnaw Bone Camp property, I believe, in 1941, the first time I saw it with my grandmother, Emily, and Fred’s grandmother, Bess.

Fred opened the camp for Boy Scouts, later to all boys, then coed, and finally all girls.

We have had family reunions at camp, and with deep enough snow, skiing with sassafras tea. Many people have rented cottages in off-seasons.

It is a natural homeland. Alice, Fred’s daughter, remains in charge of these 15-some acres where our creator seems a little bit closer.

Fred was well worth knowing and loving.
