Club news for week of Oct. 2

Rotarian Dwight Thomson introduced Rodney Walls as the Rotary Club of Brown County’s September Student of the Month at the club’s Sept. 19 meeting. Walls was accompanied by his mentor, Roger Cline, his great-grandmother, Ruth Wall, and his Life Skills teacher, Barbara Kelp (not pictured) who nominated him for the award. Kelp praised Walls for his exemplary attitude and the numerous ways that staff and students have come to rely upon him. Walls graduated in May and is employed full-time at McDonald’s but is also enrolled in continuing services at BCHS. Cline is the director of transportation for Brown County Schools and a farmer whom Walls has assisted at the transportation department’s garage and office as well as on the farm. Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Woodworkers club

The Brown County Woodworkers Club will meet Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. Professional woodworker Roger Kugler will present the program.

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

Guest speakers will be Professor Bernie Frischer and Nathanael Tavares. Frischer will discuss Rome Reborn, a series of VR applications published by his company Flyover Zone Productions, as well as his next productions, Athens Reborn and Baalbek Reborn. Tavares will assist in a demonstration.

Frischer is a digital archeologist who writes about the classical world and helps to ensure its survival by recreating it in virtual reality. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg, both in classics and summa cum laude. Since 2013, he has been professor of informatics at Indiana University where he directs the Virtual World Heritage Laboratory. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Bologna and Beijing Normal University. He directed the excavations of Horace’s Villa at the same time he founded and directed the UCLA Cultural Virtual Reality Laboratory.

Tavares is the CEO of Flyover Zone Productions and a Systems Engineer for Intel Corp. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Indiana University. At IU, he works in the Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology utilizing Intel Sports’ Intel True View immersive experience technology to recreate 3D views of sports plays by integrating views from dozens of cameras in near real time. This technology has been applied in Olympic and professional sports and has applications in entertainment, training and officiating. At Flyover Zone Productions, he creates virtual reality experiences in Unity 3D.

Veteran Bible study

The Brown County Veteran’s Chaplain Corps Bible Study for Veterans meets the first Thursday of each month at Veterans Hall, 902 Deer Run Lane, from 9 to 10 a.m. The next meeting will be Oct. 3. For more information, call 317-439-0207.

American Sewing Guild

COLUMBUS — The American Sewing Guild meets at the Bartholomew County REMC, 169 Deaver Road, on the first Saturday of each month from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The next meeting will be Oct. 5.

Each meeting focuses on learning a new sewing or creative skill, or group sewing on philanthropic sewing projects.

The meeting on Oct. 5 will feature a PowerPoint presentation by Mary Beth Simms on the art and symbolism of aboriginal fabrics from M&S Textiles. Simms will have fabrics available for purchase. Simms is a native of Columbus, currently living in Brown County. She has a degree in studio art with a concentration in fibers from St. Mary of the Woods College. She is the owner of the Yellow Door Quilt Store in Nashville.

Those interested in quilting are welcome to bring in their latest projects to show and tell.

Cemetery preservation

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4:15 p.m.

The society is a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group. All are welcome.

Peaceful Valley Heritage

Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc., a preservation group, meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at the Brown County Community Foundation building, 209 N. Van Buren St., on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Genealogical society

The Brown County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, Oct. 10 starting at 1 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. Member Kathy Evans will speak about “Things You Wish You’d Found,” some unusual sources of genealogical information.

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets the third Monday of each month. The club will meet in the lower level at the Brown County Public Library on Monday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to join.
