Annual flower sale happening now

Psi Iota Xi is selling flowers from Kelp’s Greenhouse for their spring fundraiser.

Available colors are bright pink and yellow; red and orange; and yellow.

Orders must be turned in to Jenny Austin by Saturday, April 4. Plants will be available Friday, May 1. Make checks payable to Psi Iota Xi.

Spring Blossom Parade in May canceled

The Brown County Lions Club has canceled the annual Spring Blossom Parade that was set for Saturday, May 2.

This was to have been the 57th annual parade and a tradition that began in 1929 to welcome all people to enjoy the sights and sounds of Brown County, including, at that time, the blossoming of 36 orchards in the area. Since the 1980s, the Lions Club has organized the parade.

The Lions are now planning the 58th Annual Spring Blossom Parade for the first Saturday of May 2021.

Special electronics recycling day postponed

The Brown County Recycle Center’s Electronics Day and Shredding Day that was to happen on Saturday, April 4 has been postponed. No reschedule date has been announced yet.

The recycle center, including its drive-thru, the outside bins at the center, and the outside bins at the outlying elementary schools, is closed until further notice.

Church suspends services, goes online

St. Agnes parish has suspended all weekend Masses, daily morning prayer, religious education, RCIA, youth ministry, Lenten Parish Mission and Stations of the Cross. All meetings and events and the spring work day are cancelled until further notice.

The parish office will be taking phone calls at 812-988-2778 Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Updates can be found at facebook.com/saintagnesnashville.

Mother’s Cupboard benefit rescheduled

Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen annual Soup Bowl benefit has been rescheduled to Sunday, June 21 at The Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East from 5 to 7 p.m.

Adult tickets are $25 and tickets for kids younger than 12 are $5. Advance sale tickets are available at the Brown County IGA, the Brown County Visitors Center and from Mother’s Cupboard board members. Tickets also will be available at the door.

Adult ticketholders will receive a unique hand-thrown bowl by talented Brown County potters and fill those bowls with fine soups from Brown County restaurants. Children’s tickets do not include a bowl. There will be live music and many unique items in a silent auction, as well.

Mother’s Cupboard provides free hot meals 364 days a year to anyone who asks for food. It also operates a food bank and distributes government commodities. The kitchen is funded by donations from individuals and endowments administered by the Brown County Community Foundation.

The kitchen is at its new location on the Brown County Fairgrounds off Old State Road 46, just east of Nashville, and serves a hot meal from 4 to 6 p.m. daily — even during this pandemic.

Mother’s Cupboard distributed more than 43,000 hot meals in 2019 and distributed more than 10 tons of donated food at the food pantry — no questions asked.

Brown County Historical Society cancels events

The Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., has canceled the Pioneer Women’s Gathering and Spring into Art show May 9 as well as the annual quilt show set for June 5 and 6.

The quilt raffle drawing will still take place on June 6.

Food management class happening in May

The Brown County Health Department, 201 Locust Lane, will offer a ServSafe Food Manager Class Tuesday and Wednesday, May 12 and 13. The class will include the exam to become a certified food manager. A food establishment is required by law to have a certified food manager on staff. Nonprofits are not required to have certified staff; however, food knowledge is still required by code.

Class on May 12 starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 12:30 p.m.; the May 13 class starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs until about 2:30 p.m. The class will use the seventh edition of the ServSafe Food Manager text with 2017 food code updates.

Class is limited to 14 participants. The cost is $150 and includes the text, test and class. Call the Brown County Health Department at 812-988-2255 for information or to register.

Bluebird club selling nesting boxes

The Brown County Bluebird Club’s annual bluebird nest box sale has begun. Boxes are all cedar and fully assembled. One box is $15 and two boxes are $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.

History center to host summer day camp

The Brown County Historical Society will have a Hands on History Summer Camp, Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for children ages 8 to 12. It will take place at the Pioneer Village, Owl Creek Schoolhouse and the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Children will get to learn about puppetry, pioneer household chores, cooking, textiles, art and storytelling.

The cost is $50 per child and includes a T-shirt and reusable water bottle. Registration is limited to 24 campers. Each child will need to bring a sack lunch; a snack will be provided.
