Club news for week of Sept. 6

Quilters guild

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Star Quilters Guild’s regular monthly meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Masonic Lodge, 4131 Rocky Ford Road. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. and the meeting starts at 9:30 a.m.

The program will be a presentation by Tree City Stitches on new products and fabrics that lend themselves to “stack and whack” quilts.

All are encouraged to bring their latest sewing projects for show-and-tell. There is no charge for the meeting; all are welcome.

Rotary Club

Superintendent of Brown County Schools Laura Hammack will share district success stories of the prior school year and goals for the coming year when the Brown County Rotary Club meets for breakfast at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7.

Hammack also will talk about the previous legislative cycle and will field questions from the audience.

Area residents interested in learning more about Rotary are welcome to the meeting at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meeting is Sept. 7. Meetings are at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Widowed group

The Brown County Widowed Group will meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at the home of Keith Bradway, 153 Artist Drive. If carpooling, meet at the post office.

A guest speaker from the Brown County recycling program is planned.

Any widowed person is welcome to attend.

Weight loss group

COLUMBUS — National nonprofit weight-loss group Take Off Pounds Sensibly, also known as TOPS, meets in the MainSource Bank meeting room, 2310 W. Jonathan Moore Pike. Monday meetings begin with weigh-ins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 11:30 a.m.

Beekeepers club

The 10 o’clock Beeline Beekeepers Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11 in a lower-level meeting room of the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane.

The speaker will be Kathleen Prough, chief apiarist for the state of Indiana. She will talk about pests of the beehive.

The club welcomes anyone interested in bees or beekeeping; those interested in starting a beehive are particularly encouraged to attend. Experienced beekeepers are available as mentors.

Retired teachers

Brown County Retired Teachers will gather at noon Tuesday, Sept. 12 in the downstairs meeting room of the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 N. Van Buren St.

Ruth Ann Ingraham, president of the Brown County Native Woodlands Project, will speak about the project’s focus to eradicate invasive plant species. Sweetea’s will cater the meal. For reservations, email [email protected] or [email protected]. All former teachers are welcome.

Rock, mineral club

Brown County Rock & Mineral Club members will host a rock and mineral show/swap from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. It will be at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Pioneer Women’s Club

Twenty-nine members of the Pioneer Women’s Club met at the Brown County History Center for their monthly meeting and luncheon. The club shared the success of participating as vendors at the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall at the Columbus fairgrounds. They sold patriotic craft items and donated a red, white and blue quilt for auction to the American Legion. The club was happy to support the American Legion for bringing the wall to the community.

Final preparations were made for the Brown County Historical Society Quilt Show, which will take place at the Brown County History Center Sept. 22-24. Admission will be $5, with children 12 and younger admitted free. There are 11 categories in which people may enter their quilted items. An application for entry can be found at browncountyhistorycenter.org.

Vendors participating in this year’s show wil be: Coffee Cup Quilting, Cindy Claycamp — Primitive Spirit, Bedford Sewing Center and Mary Beth Sims and her modern fabrics. Each day local musicians will play and sewing and handcraft lessons and demonstrations will be given. Sandwiches, sides, homemade pies, etc. will be sold.

The raffle quilt and treasure basket drawings will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24. The Pioneer Women’s Club invites the entire community to attend their 38th quilt show.

This year’s Pioneer Women’s Club raffle quilt is “Christmas Stars,” designed and created by the late Kay McLeod, June Wolpert, Francie Eastridge and Connie Pockevich. The drawing will take place Sunday, Sept. 24 at the conclusion of the Pioneer Women’s annual quilt show.
