‘Chicks on the Right’ to appear at local dinner

Brown County Republicans’ Lincoln Day Dinner will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 at The Seasons Conference Center.

Special guests will be the “Chicks on the Right.” Mock and Daisy can be heard weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. on WIBC FM 93.1, conservative talk radio.

Master of ceremonies will be Ted Adams. Amanda Webb will perform the national anthem. A live auction with auctioneer is planned.

The Brown County Purdue Extension will have its annual dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 at the Exhibit Building at the 4-H Fairgrounds. It is free and open to the public.

The meeting will include updates from the extension educator and guest speaker Tony Gaudin of the 10 o’clock Beeline Beekeepers club.

Annual bazaar at Catholic church this weekend

St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1008 McLary Road, will host its annual Christmas bazaar in the lower level Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4.

The bazaar opens at 9 a.m. both days and closes at 5 p.m. Friday and 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission and parking are free.

Items include Christmas decor; books; jewelry and accessories; collectibles and vintage dolls; hand-knitted, crocheted and quilted materials; pottery art; wall hangings, wood items; stamping and paper crafting creations; outside vendor specialties; hot tea served by Sweetea’s; cookies by the pound and other baked goods.

Outside vendors and artisans include wood art by Tom Lowe, Christmas folk art by Pat Thummel, doTerra essential oils from Mary Ann Soll, Mary Kay cosmetics from Bethany Drew, crochet crafts by Ashton Wintergerst, artwork and jewelry by Georgia Ballinger (Friday only), and Christmas crafts and pecan butter by Sylvia Grinstead (Saturday only).

Firefighters host annual turkey shoot

BEAN BLOSSOM — Fruitdale Volunteer Fire, 5200 State Road 135 North, will host a turkey shoot at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4.

Guns can be 12- or 20-gauge, with a 32-inch barrel limit. The cost is $5 per shoot. Prizes include a 50/50 money shoot, turkey, ham and bacon.

The Brown County Vietnam Veterans will host the annual Buck Stogsdill Veterans Day bean dinner from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at Veterans Hall.

Church celebrating 70th anniversary

Church to host classical piano concert

VAN BUREN TWP. — Harmony Church, 3999 Mt. Liberty Road at the intersection with Bellsville Pike, will host a piano concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5. A sandwich and soup lunch will be served at 1 p.m.

Two doctoral pianists from the IU Jacobs School of Music will perform. John Urban will perform Schumann’s “Fantasy in C,” the first and second movements, and the first movement of Haydn’s “Sonata in A-flat.” Andreas Ioannides will perform some etudes by Claude Debussy.

Urban, in addition to studying and playing classical piano, also plays with the eclectic music-healing ensemble WholeNotes. His other interests include Walt Whitman, being a “global flaneur” and esoteric traditions.

Ioannides, of Cyprus, has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America. Last December he was awarded the third prize at the prestigious BNDES International Piano Competition in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Presentation about courthouse, scenic byway

Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation and the League of Women Voters of Indiana will co-sponsor a presentation Wednesday, Nov. 8 by James Glass titled, “The Historic Brown County Courthouse, Old Town Nashville and the Hoosier Hills Scenic Byway.”

The presentation will be followed by a community conversation on the preservation and promotion of our Brown County heritage.

This event will take place at 7 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library.

Veterans Day program set for Nov. 10

Brown County Schools will host its annual Veterans Day program Friday, Nov. 10 in the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium at Brown County High School.

Veteran Lt. Col. Dave Endris will be the guest speaker.

Veterans social hour will begin at 8:30 a.m. Students and staff will assemble at 9:15 a.m. in the gym.

Doors will open to the public at 9 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:30 a.m. The program will include introduction of veterans and recognition of fallen veterans’ widows; commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Brown County veteran Larry C. Banks’ ultimate sacrifice; a military salute performed by the BCHS band and choirs from the high school and junior high; presentations of the 2017 Voice of Democracy essay contest winners and Patriot’s Pin by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars; and presentations by the BCHS History Club.

Immediately following, a luncheon will be provided by the food services department in the auxiliary gym. All veterans and their families are welcome.

Date set for annual fall fashion show

Mulberry Cottage will stage its fall fashion show at the Brown County Inn Friday, Nov. 10. Doors open at 5 p.m. for visitors to shop the “mini boutique” at buy one, get one half off, and the show starts at 7 p.m.

GATESVILLE — The Goshen Community Church annual bazaar, quilt raffle, bake sale and bean dinner will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

The bazaar will include handcrafted items, homemade jams and jellies, baked goods and rummage sale items.

Dinners for a $5 donation feature soup — bean, vegetable or chili — slaw, two corn muffins, choice of dessert and drink.

The Abe Martin Bazaar will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Brown County History Center on East Gould Street, north of the courthouse.

Women’s retreat planned Nov. 11

Co-director of CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, Angi Sullivan, will facilitate a women’s retreat from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

The retreat will allow women to explore outdoor challenges by choice and to write in response to questions that arise in the context of how life challenges are met. It will take place at the CYO camp, 2230 Clay Lick Road.

The event is sponsored by Women Writing for (a) Change. The $75 fee includes a ropes course challenge, three writing circles using WWf(a)C safe circle practices, snacks, lunch and dinner. Tuition assistance is available. All activities are optional.

The Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau is offering a weekday Sippin’ Trip of local wineries and distilleries.

The guided walking and bus tour includes transportation, tastings, water, snacks and a Brown County souvenir.

Trips are offered from 1 to 5 p.m. most weekdays. Each trip, $45, lasts three to four hours.

A session of Tuesday morning story time at the Brown County Public Library runs through Dec. 5.

Training for a community food emergency offered

The Terrorism and All Hazards Preparedness Committee of the Indiana Environmental Health Association will sponsor free training in “Managing Food Emergencies; Strategies for a Community Response.”

Training will be at the Brown County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 14 and 15. There is no charge to attend, but participants must register.

Designed to help communities make a plan to deal with a large food emergency, training will include realizing when you need help, what resources are needed and where to get them, making a plan to get a response, how agencies interact and who to contact.

Participants from agriculture, emergency management, EMS, fire, police, veterinarians, laboratory, food sector managers and public health employees are encouraged to attend.

The course will be taught by representatives of the National Center for Biomedical Research and Training of Louisiana State University under the NCBRT Homeland Security National Training Program.

Free legal clinic planned at public library

Legal Aid, a nonprofit agency, will host a free legal aid clinic from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Brown County Public Library.

People who attend will receive a 10-minute consultation to answer general questions, offer legal information or to receive other limited assistance or advice. There is no need to register in advance.

Legal Aid provides free civil legal services, lawyer referrals and domestic violence-related legal representation to low-income individuals in Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Rush and Shelby counties.

Health department offers food manager’s class

The last ServSafe class of the year will be conducted Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 20 and 21 at the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane.

Class will start at 8:30 a.m. each day and will finish at 12:30 p.m. Monday and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The cost for the class, text and test is $125. The text is the seventh edition of ServSafe Food Manager.

Brown County State Park will host a live bird show with representatives from the Indiana Raptor Center through fall.

Indiana Rail Road Santa Train coming to town

HELMSBURG — The Indiana Rail Road Co. will bring Santa, Mrs. Claus and a train full of storybook characters to Morgantown and Helmsburg to visit with local children on Friday, Dec. 1.

The Santa Train is due to arrive at the tracks by the Morgantown fire station at 6:30 p.m. The line will close at 7:30 p.m.

The train is scheduled to roll into the Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road, at 8:30 p.m. The line to see Santa will close at 9:30 p.m.

In addition to hearing children’s wishes, Santa Train volunteers deliver donated winter clothing to children who need it. Steele’s Country Christmas celebration planned

BELMONT — T.C. Steele State Historic Site will open a decorated Studio to friends and neighbors for its annual holiday celebration, Steeles’ Country Christmas.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, children and families can visit and get photos with St. Nicholas and Belsnickel, make a Christmas card, decorate an ornament and hear a holiday music program. Cookies and mulled cider will be served.
