Club news for week of May 15

Rotary Club

Monica Cannaley, energy efficiency organizer for the Hoosier Chapter of the Sierra Club, will speak at the Brown County Rotary Club’s next breakfast meeting. It will start at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, May 17 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn.

Cannaley’s focus will be on Indiana’s current energy climate, ways that citizens can reduce energy consumption while improving comfort and reducing costs, remediation of the environment and improvements in health.

Members of the community are welcome to attend the meeting at 105 S. Van Buren St., especially those interested in helping with an activity to serve the community.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meeting will be May 17 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Widowed Group

On Saturday, May 19, the Brown County Widowed Group will visit Winton’s Iris Hill, 7131 E. 550 South in Franklin, at 11:30 a.m. Participants can meet at the St. David’s Episcopal Church parking lot in Bean Blossom to depart at 10:45 a.m. or at the Mexican restaurant in Morgantown to be picked up en route.

The group will leave Iris Hill at 12:30 p.m. to have lunch at Southern Comfort in Trafalgar at 1 p.m.

Weight-loss group

COLUMBUS — National nonprofit weight-loss group Take Off Pounds Sensibly, also known as TOPS, meets in the MainSource Bank meeting room, 2310 W. Jonathan Moore Pike. Monday meetings begin with weigh-ins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 11:30 a.m.

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets at 6:30 p.m the third Monday of each month in a lower-level meeting room at the Brown County Public Library. On May 21, David Mow, a volunteer at Brown County State Park and Master Gardener, will talk about medicinal and edible wild herbs. He has started a herbarium collection for the park. The public is welcome.

Beekeepers club

Kathleen Prough will present a hive inspection demonstration at Tony Gaudin’s house on Saturday, May 26. For more information, call Gaudin at 765-318-0525.

Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club is preparing for its annual quilt show, June 1-3 at the Brown County History Center.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. The cafe will open at 10:30 a.m. with soup, sandwiches, sides, homemade pies, cookies and brownies available.

Quilts can be entered in 11 different categories.

Members of the club will have demonstrations in quilting, weaving, spinning, and sewing. Besides live music, a raffle, quilts and demonstrations, gift shops and vendors will be set up.

Admission is $5 per person or free for children 12 and younger.

The club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, meets at 1 p.m. and again at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting will be June 12. The public is welcome.

Preservation group

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc. preservation group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. June 12 at the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. All are welcome.
