Alan Birkemeier

Brown County native Alan Birkemeier, a teacher at Central Middle School in Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, traveled to Germany June 1 to 16 on a fellowship with the Transatlantic Outreach Program.

Birkemeier was one of 100 social studies and STEM educators chosen for the two-week, all-expenses-paid study tour. Social studies teachers looked at the situation of refugees in Germany and explored nuances of Germany’s apprenticeship system. Highlights of TOP fellowships typically include access to German elementary and high schools, vocational schools, corporations, manufacturers, non-governmental organizations, cultural venues, policy makers, historical sites and more.

Michael Potts

INDIANAPOLIS — Michael Potts of Brown County Junior High School and 21 other Hoosier teachers studied the U.S. Constitution and constitutional law this summer courtesy of Indiana lawyers and the Indiana Bar Foundation. These are topics that students in the We the People program also study.

Discussions included how the Constitution limits government power to protect individual rights while promoting the common good; why the meaning of the Second Amendment and government regulation is controversial today; and the role of political parties in the constitutional system.

The teachers also prepared for a mock hearing after only a few days of learning. This was designed to give them an experience similar to what their We the People students experience when they testify in the civics competition.
