Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Rotary club

Lisa Bowman, founder and CEO of Hope for Hearts Horse Farm, will talk about the equine-assisted facility when the Brown County Rotary Club meets at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Artists Colony Inn downtown, 105 S. Van Buren St.

For the past six years, the nonprofit has been helping people by using ground-work activities with horses as therapy, building confidence and providing a peaceful place for restoration and renewal.

Bowman is a registered nurse who worked in intensive care and psychiatric nursing, served as director of home care/home infusion for the state’s largest home care organization. She was responsible for leadership development training for 11 years. She decided to stay at home when she and her husband, Roland, became parents. During her time at home, the dream of Hope for Hearts began.

Members of the community are welcome at the meeting, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to be of service.

Literary club

Judy East will lead a discussion of “The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness” when the Nashville Literary Club meets Thursday, Oct. 18 at the home of Karen Sparks.

To carpool, meet at 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Brown County IGA or St. David’s Episcopal Church; the meeting begins at 2 p.m. Barb Newton will serve as co-hostess.

Weight-loss group

COLUMBUS — National nonprofit weight-loss group Take Off Pounds Sensibly, also known as TOPS, meets in the MainSource Bank meeting room, 2310 W. Jonathan Moore Pike. Monday meetings begin with weigh-ins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to try the club for free. Garden club

The Brown County Garden Club meets at 10:30 a.m. the first Thursday of each month at various locations. The next meeting will be Nov. 1. For more information, visit Brown County Garden Club on Facebook.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meetings will be Nov. 1 and 15 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, meets at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting will be Nov. 6. The public is welcome.

Preservation group

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc. preservation group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. All are welcome.

Genealogy group

The Brown County Genealogical Society meets from 1 to 3 p.m. the second Thursday of the month in Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Nov. 8.

League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Brown County has a monthly board meeting from 10 a.m. to noon the second Monday of each month. Meetings are conducted in lower-level meeting room A of the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be Nov. 12. The public is welcome.

Art alliance

Art Alliance Brown County is a club open to all area artists, including musicians, poets, thespians, textile artists and others creating two- and three-dimensional art. Focused on supporting and encouraging the arts in Brown County, the club has become a social networking group. The alliance meets every other month.

Current board members include Lory Winford, president; M.K. Watkins, vice president; Theresa Shadley, treasurer; and Heather Nicholson, secretary.

The Brown County Herb Society meets at 6:30 p.m the third Monday of each month in a lower-level meeting room at the Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Nov. 19. The public is welcome.
