Local student places in regional spelling bee

BLOOMINGTON — Sprunica Elementary fourth-grader Abrielle Sanders placed third among all students in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee Feb. 16 at the Monroe County Public Library.

The event, known as the IU Bee, was co-sponsored by Indiana University’s Media School and School of Education and included students from schools across south-central Indiana. In addition to spelling words on stage, the contest included a vocabulary portion and a written test.

Besides Sanders, local contestants included:

  • Nathan Crenshaw, seventh-grader at Brown County Junior High School;
  • Alayna Jacobus, fifth-grader at Brown County Intermediate School;
  • Addison Young, fourth-grader at Van Buren Elementary School; and
  • Angel Kochopolous, fourth-grader at Helmsburg Elementary School.

The winner of the IU Bee, fourth-grader Yena Park of University Elementary School in Bloomington, was awarded a trip to the national spelling bee May 26 to 31 in National Harbor, Maryland, paid for by the IU Media School and School of Education. Park’s winning word was “enthusiasm.”
