Club news for week of June 12

Preservation society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 11 at 4:15 p.m. in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The society is a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group. All are welcome.

Peaceful Valley Heritage

Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc., a preservation group, meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at the Brown County Community Foundation building, 209 N. Van Buren St., on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St., on Thursday, June 13 at 7:15 a.m. Bill Land will discuss information and stories from his CD, “The Land and Lore of Brown County,” including the history and geology of Brown County and stories of the state park, Lake Monroe and Browning Mountain. Copies of the CD will be available for purchase, proceeds will go to the Brown County Humane Society.

Land earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University in geography and was assistant professor of geography at Butler University. He has been planning director of Brown County and the City of Huntingburg. A former member of the Brown County Rotary Club, he was subsequently a founding member of the Jasper Rotary Club. He will be accompanied by his wife, Doris Brinegar, retired speech pathologist and Brown County native.

Members of the community — especially those interested in learning about and helping with Rotary activities and projects — are invited to attend.

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets the third Monday of each month. The club will meet in the lower level of the Brown County Public Library on Monday, June 17 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to join.

Discussion group

Join the Brown County Public Library’s discussion group on Wednesday, June 26 at 1 p.m. to discuss the June topic: “Life’s Best Medicine: Laughter.” Come discuss what makes you laugh and bring funny stories to share.

The Fourth Wednesday Discussion Group meets each month to discuss a pre-selected topic of interest designed to foster stimulating conversation, companionship and laughter. For more information, call the library at 812-988-2850.

Lions club

The Brown County Lions Club is ready to receive grant applications from organizations in order to fund special projects. Applications must be postmarked by Sunday, June 30 to be considered. Forms can be secured by inquiring at P.O. Box 716, Nashville, IN 47448, or by visiting e-clubhouse.org/sites/browncounty.

The grants committee will review applications in early July with allocations to be made in late August and early September. Grant funds are limited and will be awarded based on importance of projects to the betterment of the community.
