Pioneer Women celebrate successful quilt show

Four teams from surrounding quilt clubs competed in sewing strips of coordinated fabric into lap-sized quilt tops. Amid cheers, laughter and machine malfunctions, the teams competed, sewing at top speed for a solid 40 minutes.

The Pioneer Women Club of Brown County has completed another successful quilt show for 2019. The show took place May 31 and June 1 at our beautiful History Center in Nashville. Attendees enjoyed viewing over 90 quilts, a “bed turning” (seeing and hearing about 15 quilts, turned down in quick succession) and a “jelly roll race.”

The newly created Brown County Heritage Award (to recognize and promote hand-quilting on a bed-sized quilt) went to Gail Woodruff, 91, from Scottsburg.

In addition to her winning entry, Gail entered 11 more quilts, each made in honor of her ancestors. The group of quilts was created to tell the story of her family’s immigration from Ireland to America, to settle in Indiana.

In response to learning she had won a monetary award, Gail wrote: “I didn’t even know about the Heritage Award and was astounded when I opened the envelope and saw the check! You see, I did not enter looking for a prize, just wanted to share my immigrant family story portrayed in traditional quilt patterns, and hadn’t even read the information about prize money. So you see, if I didn’t react as one should have after receiving so generous a prize, it’s because I didn’t know what a prize it was.”
