ART BRIEFS: Summer Playhouse schedule; new exhibits open; learn from masters

Playhouse to host wide variety of shows

Lee Roy Parnell is set to perform at the Playhouse Friday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. Parnell is an Americana/blues/rock artist known for his guitar prowess, smooth soul-drenched voice and songwriting skills. He has earned two Grammy award nominations for his instrumental tracks, “Cat Walk” with Flaco Jiménez and “Mama, Screw Your Wig on Tight.” Tickets are $31.50 for general admission, $35.50 for reserved seating.

The Playhouse will be holding a fundraiser performance with a special preview of “Ring of Fire,” a musical about Johnny Cash, Friday, Aug. 16. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with pre-show activities of karaoke, a casual dinner, a cash bar and a silent auction. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear black. Tickets are $70 in honor of the Playhouse’s 70th anniversary and must be purchased before Saturday, Aug. 10. Proceeds go to Playhouse sustainability.

Dress in your best Woodstock-era clothing and relive the music of 1969 at “The Summer of ’69: Music from the Woodstock Era.” Several performances are set, all beginning at 7:30 p.m.: Friday, Aug. 30; Saturday, Aug. 31; and Saturday, Oct. 5. Tickets are $21.50, or $20.50 for seniors, military and students. Concessions, beer, wine and mixed drinks will be sold.

Art Alliance Brown County exhibiting in Seymour

SEYMOUR — Art Alliance Brown County will exhibit members’ work at the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts starting this week through Aug. 10.

The AABC exhibit at SICA will open on Wednesday, July 17. SICA is open Wednesdays through Fridays from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. An opening reception will take place Friday, July 19 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Art Alliance artists and SICA board members will be present to answer questions, provide tours and assist with art sales.

Artists were invited to display all mediums including paintings, photographs, 3-D art, pottery and jewelry. Sales will benefit the artist and the center.

The Southern Indiana Center for the Arts, 2001 N. Ewing St. in Seymour, provides an environment for all students, artists and patrons of all ages to study, practice and appreciate the arts.

AABC’s mission is to network, educate, advertise and encourage one another for the benefit of the individual, the community and the visiting public of Brown County.

“To have talented artists from the region display their work in our space is a great way to share the beauty of Indiana with a new audience,” said said SICA Executive Director Sean Hildreth.

Register for mixed media workshop

BELMONT — Dixie Ferrer will lead an Arts in the Parks workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road.

The workshop is two days of mixed media work inspired by a hike in the woods. Participants attend both sessions to work on one piece of art. The event is free with site admission through grants from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Art to be featured at local coffee shop

Common Grounds Coffee Bar & Tea Shop will present nature paintings and photography this summer by local artist Sherry Butler Stiver. An opening reception with a meet-and-greet will be Friday, July 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. The show will be up through August.

Learn to sketch native plants at state park

Rachel Johnson will lead a program, “Sketching Indiana Native Plants,” at Brown County State Park on a series of Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28.

The events are funded by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission as part of Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites for 2019.

Artist to host barn quilt workshop downtown

Join professional barn quilt-painter Vicki Howarth and paint a mini barn quilt on a wood plaque, Saturday, July 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Plein air oil painting at Paynetown

PAYNETOWN — Brown County artist Charlene Marsh will demonstrate plein air oil painting Saturday, July 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Visitors Center patio near the swimming beach at Paynetown State Recreation Area, 4850 S. State Road 446 in Bloomington.

This year, Marsh has added a “hands on” component to give visitors a chance to try painting themselves. Support, paint, palette knives and brushes will be available. Non-toxic, washable, tempera paints suitable for children to use will be provided.

The program will be rain or shine.

A $7 fee is charged per vehicle with Indiana license plates to enter the property. Vehicles with out-of-state license plates are $9. State park passes can be used.

This program is made possible through a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission.

Art alliance to host showcase at Playhouse

The Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission and the Art Alliance Brown County are sponsoring a special art show at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St. It will premiere at the Fingerstyle Guitar Competition Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28. The show will remain hanging through Monday, Sept. 30.

AABC members are welcome to present music-themed artwork in the show. The show is not juried officially, but selections may be made to accommodate the theme and space. Staff will be able to sell work with a 20-percent commission during the festival, with proceeds going toward the event. Works can be sold after the festival, but buyers will need to contact artists directly to make private arrangements for payment and pickup. No commission will be charged.

Works must be dropped off at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., between Sunday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 23. The guild is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Works shall be displayed in the Playhouse.

Brushless painting classes taught at winery

Local artist Anabel Hopkins has started “Pour ’n More,” a series of art classes centered on a technique of fluid acrylic pouring. This is a brushless form of abstract painting on canvas, tiles and other surfaces.

Hopkins will teach from 1 to 3 p.m. each first Saturday through Sept. 7 at Country Heritage Winery (formerly Chateau Thomas) 225 S. Van Buren St. in Coachlight Square. The next class will be August 3.

All materials and snacks will be provided; beverages will be sold. Participants will complete two projects under Hopkins’ guidance.

Learn to draw, sketch people with pastels

Wayne Campbell will lead a two-day workshop in drawing and pastels Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Participants will be working with live, clothed models and photos, using a method which Campbell finds to be an easier way to draw and paint. Students will build a foundation map that takes minutes before each drawing.

Live music at T.C. Steele State Historic Site

Tom Roznowski will perform Hoosier songbook favorites in Steele’s Large Studio, 4220 T.C. Steele Rd., Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Grateful Dead tribute band at local festival

The second annual Lazy Summer Home event will take place Friday through Sunday, Aug. 23 and 25, at Mike’s Dance Barn, 2277 State Road 46 West, from noon Friday until noon Sunday.

The event normally takes place to the Indiana RedBarn; it is now at Mike’s Dance Barn which has more space to park, camp and dance, and a restaurant and full bar.

The Indianapolis band Hyryder will be featured, playing seven sets of their Grateful Dead tribute experience.

Tickets are $50 and include camping. Children younger than 10 can attend free with adult supervision.

Book signing and birds planned at gallery

After years out of print, Bill Zimmerman‘s “The Birds of Indiana” will go on sale Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

This even is made possible by the Johnson Family. Jenny Johnson has given 40 copies to the gallery and Bill’s wife, Judy, will be on hand to sign copies.

The Indiana Raptor Center will also host a program beginning at 1:30 p.m. A $5 donation for the center will be collected at the door.

Festival in Bloomington to feature local artists

BLOOMINGTON — The annual Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts, on Fouth Street between Indiana Avenue and Grant Street, will take place Labor Day Weekend, Aug. 31 through Sept. 1 and will feature the work of six Brown County artists:

Guild announces summer exhibitions, fall workshop

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., is planning summer exhibitions featuring new works from member artists as well as a special exhibition of past and present works featuring landscapes.

The guild will offer a workshop from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. Wyatt LeGrand and Larry Rudolech will teach an Upper Schooner Open Air workshop. Participants will spend a day painting the countryside on a property south of Nashville. All painting styles and levels are welcome. The price is $220.50 for members and $245 for non-members. A picnic lunch is included.

Annual art contest at T.C. Steele Historic Site

BELMONT — The 31st annual Great Outdoor Art Contest will take place at T.C. Steele Historic Site Saturday, Sept. 14 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Part of the Brown County Art Colony Weekend in Nashville, the oldest plein air art contest in Indiana is for artists of all ages, beginners and established talents. Join in the competition or visit and watch the artists at work en plein air — the style Steele preferred for his impressionist landscape paintings of Indiana.

First place and People’s Choice winners will be displayed until the end of September at the Brown County Art Guild.

Registration and materials will be available for download beginning Aug. 1. Early bird rates apply. Regular rates begin Sept. 1 with day-of registration available. Artists shall provide their own supplies. Parking is $3 for the general public.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels; an alternative process darkroom; macro photography equipment; a digital projector; a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln; PCB etching equipment and tanks; leaded glass tools; metal forming and casting tools; electronics and robotics fabrication tools; various computer numerical control tools; a scroll saw; band saw; drill press; centrifuge; bench grinder/polisher; laser cutter/engraver; air compressor; vacuum pumps; and chemistry vent hood.
