About a half-dozen intrepid sailors launched crafts on Sweetwater Lake on Sept. 21 — and most of them sank.

That’s to be expected when you build a boat out of cardboard.

Brown County Parks and Recreation conducted its second annual Corrugated Chaos regatta Sept. 21. Dave Jarrett attended and sent these comments:

“George Sloman not only entered the Arhhhh Mach 2, but also constructed a pirate’s envy display of the Jolly Roger flag, treasure chest, and working cannon which was shot off at the opening of the event. His black pirate ship lacked a proper rudder assembly, resulting in a ship with no directional stability. It went in circles.

“The Red Baron entry might have flown better that it floated, although the pilot/captain was dressed quite appropriately.

“The Drill did win the speed award, coming in one second under the previous year’s record, but it did sink and deteriorate at the finish line.

“The Swan Dive made it back and forth in good condition, although the swan appendage looked quite deflated.”

Awards went to Tucker Congrove for most creative design for his space shuttle boat; Ian Ross for the team spirit award, most enthusiastic and best costume; and George Webb for the overall fastest boat with a time of 2:11.
