A 34-year-old Bedford man was injured in a crash near Hawthorne Drive in Nashville on May 12 after he reportedly fell asleep while driving.

Nashville Police Chief Ben Seastrom responded to the crash just before 8:30 a.m. on State Road 46 East near Hawthorne Drive. Andrew Acton told Seastrom he fell asleep while driving and that he last remembered stopping at Auto Zone in Columbus to use his phone, the accident report states.

Seastrom noted that Auto Zone is 16 miles away from the crash scene.

A witness told police that he was driving behind Acton’s vehicle and that Acton was all over the road. The witness called 911 as the crash was happening.

Acton’s vehicle left the road heading west and struck the guardrail. His vehicle ramped into the air and hit a tree at the bottom of an embankment.

Acton was taken to a hospital for a head injury and other injuries, according to the report.

It was not known if he was wearing a seat belt. The vehicle was towed.
