Brown County Head Start preschool graduated 12 students into kindergarten at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Openings are now available for children ages 3 to 5. The preschool class is offered year-round, for free.

Bus pickup is available and meals are provided. Children do not need to be potty-trained to attend.

Head Start meets at the YMCA, 105 Willow St., Nashville, for six or seven hours every weekday.

The class is taught by Kelle Pope, assisted by Sherry Dowell. Pam Smith is the cook and bus driver.

There are several ways a family can become eligible to send their child to Head Start for free.

Children are eligible if a family meets income guidelines; a child is in foster care or a ward of the state; if a family receives certain government assistance; or a child has a disability or special needs.

In addition to education for the children, the Head Start program offers screenings to make sure kids are on track with their development, hearing and vision screenings, a family support program, and a parenting education curriculum.
