Club news for week of April 6

Pioneer Women

Last month, the Brown County Historical Society’s Pioneer Women’s Club discussed what events they will participate in this year during their March business meeting.

The PWC will be participating in the following events this year:

April 6 and 13: Spring cleaning days for the Brown County History Center and Pioneer Village.

April 20: Julia Crawley’s presentation on the “Tube Cutting Method” will be held in Howard Hughes Hall at the History Center.

May 7: The Pioneer Women All Stars will ride the train in the Spring Blossom Parade. Chances on the PWC raffle quilt will be sold in the History Center parking lot. The Pioneer Village will also be open to the public after the parade.

May 14 : PWC will participate in the Spring Into Art Craft Show at the History Center.

May 21: PWC will be at the Brown County Historical Society’s “Antique Truck and Tractor Show” held in and around the Pioneer Village.

June 3 and 4: The PWC will present their 2022 Quilt Exhibit in the History Center.

The Pioneer Women’s Club functions as a complementary group within the Brown County Historical Society. They meet each Wednesday at the Brown County History Center, 60 E. Gould St., from 9 a.m. until noon.

Rotary club

Centra Credit Union Mortgage Loan Originator Maggie De La Rosa will speak to the Brown County Rotary Club on Thursday, April 7.

The meeting will begin at 7:45 a.m. Rosa will discuss mortgage origination, the market for mortgages and changes in the industry.

Rosa has been with Centra for nearly 12 years in many capacities. Beginning as a bank teller, Rosa was promoted to assistant branch manager before working as manager of two different branches. She then found her calling in mortgage lending. Rosa has been a mortgage loan originator for Centra for the last six years where she specializes in conventional mortgages, home equity lines of credit and construction loans.

Rosa lives with her family on State Road 135 South near Stone Head. In her own time, Rosa raises chickens, gardens, preserves food and spends time camping. She’s also active with her children at Van Buren Elementary School and is treasurer of the Bantam Football League in Nashville.

Members of the community, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to the community, are invited to attend. Beekeepers club

The 10 o’clock Beeline Beekeepers Club will hold its monthly meeting on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall at the Brown County Fairgrounds, 802 Memorial Drive.

They welcome anyone who is interested in beekeeping. Those interested in starting a beehive are particularly encouraged to attend. Experienced beekeepers in the club are available as mentors to new members.

Major topics of discussion will be preparing for the imminent nectar flow, swarms and making splits.

Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society will hold its annual meeting on April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County Community Foundation building, 209 N. Van Buren St., and on Zoom.

They will welcome speaker Jim Eagleman, retired Department of Natural Resources Naturalist and Natural Resources Consultant. All are welcome to attend.

Veterans organizations

Veterans service organizations of Brown County have various meetings throughout the month, all meeting at Veterans Hall, 902 Deer Run Lane. The Veterans Hall is a government facility and is alcohol free.

Vietnam Veterans of Brown County meet on first Wednesdays. The next meeting is April 6 at 7 p.m.

Veterans of Foreign Wars meet on second Thursdays. The next meeting is April 14 at 7 p.m.

American Legion meets on third Wednesdays. The next meeting is April 20 at 7 p.m.

Bluebird club

The Brown County Bluebird Club is again offering fully-assembled cedar bluebird nest boxes for $15 each or two for $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.

Historical society

The Brown County Historical Society holds informative and educational meetings throughout the year, and members receive a quarterly society newsletter and a monthly archives e-journal.

Membership is $10 for students, $20 for individuals and $35 for families.

General membership meetings are pitch-in dinners on the first Monday of every month, in the History Center’s Grand Hall, 90 E. Gould St., at 6:30 p.m. A brief business meeting follows dinner with a historically themed presentation afterwards.

Literary club

Nashville Literary Club meets monthly to discuss books and is currently accepting new members.

The literary club was founded in 1934 to encourage reading and an appreciation of literature. The club meets monthly to discuss books based on a topic or an agreed-upon reading list. The club is also an opportunity to make new friends with common interests.
