Commission accepting nominations for art awards

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the 2017 Governor’s Arts Awards until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 15.

The awards recognize excellence in artistic achievement, philanthropy, arts education and leadership in the arts.

Nominations originally made but not selected for the 2015/2016 Bicentennial Governor’s Arts Awards will automatically be reconsidered for 2017. However, nominators may wish to submit updated information.

Artists can apply to be on studio tours

Applications are being accepted for the 19th annual Back Roads of Brown County studio tour. A juried event, the October tour is founded and produced by local artists.

Make jewelry from beads and wire at free program

From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, a free jewelry program will be offered for adults and teens at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane, led by local artist Cheri Platter. Materials will be provided for making small items such as earrings and a bracelet.

Workshops planned at art gallery

Two workshops featuring two artists will be conducted monthly in the Art Education Studio at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Both require participants to bring their own supplies.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 25, Jeanne McLeish will conduct a $60 class that includes any medium.

All Color Media, led by Wyatt LeGrand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 4, costs $125.

Photo club exhibiting work at winery

Work by members of the Brown County Photography Club will be on exhibit at Chateau Thomas Winery during regular hours through Tuesday, Feb. 28. The show will be changed during its run, so multiple visits are encouraged.

The show will feature a variety of photographic styles from established and emerging artists including Norberto Nunes, Sharon Bussert, Jessica Bussert, Max Lance, Shirley Lance, Gail Hyde, Tyria McKain, Dan Troglin, Dick Haggard, Tony Cecere, Bobbie Walker and John Walker.

Framed and matted photographs will be offered for sale. Matted photos will be in the lobby to the left of the main music venue.

The photo club is open to photographers of all skill levels. The group meets at 7 p.m. on second Tuesdays in lower-level Room B of the Brown County Public Library. Visitors are welcome. Art guild to focus on pastels during month of March

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., will feature the exhibit “Unexpected Light: The History & Importance of Pastels” throughout March.

It will include works by Donna Shortt, Pam Newell, Corrine Hull, Mary Ann Davis, Carol Strock Wasson, Chris Griffin Woods, Gerrie Govert, Ron Burgess, Robert Hoffman and Charlene George, plus never-before-seen pastel works by early Brown County artists Carl Graf, V.J. Cariani and Marie Goth.

Free demonstrations and lectures are also scheduled at the Guild as follows:

  • Saturday, March 4 — 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., pastel demonstration and talk by member artist Davis.
  • Saturday, March 18 — 2 to 3:30 p.m., brief lecture and demonstration on pastels by member artist Wasson.

The art guild is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Weaving workshop planned at Artists Colony

The Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St., will offer weaving workshops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 12 and Saturday, April 29.

Participants will be able to use a tapestry weaving loom and tools, a variety of yarn textures and colors, a printed weaving guide and get a meal voucher for lunch or dinner at Artists Colony the day of the workshop.

Studio, display space available in gallery

B3 Gallery, in a new location at 61 W. Main St., is seeking additional Hoosier artwork to display.

All varieties of 3-D work are sought, as well as 2-D space for artists not currently affiliated with a local gallery.

Studio space also is available for artists who need a dedicated space to work, to give demonstrations or classes and to display their work.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.

Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.
