Nashville United Methodist Church is accepting new choir members. Practices are at 7 p.m. Wednesdays; the choir sings at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. It does not meet during summer.

Quilting workshop, trunk show set at library

Lu Brunnemer and Connie Pockovich will offer a quilting workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Brown County Public Library. The workshop/trunk show is free and open to teens and adults.

The ladies will answer quilting questions, discuss how to begin, give project help and talk about methods such as hand- versus machine-quilting.

Hoosier Women Artists works due Friday

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana women are invited to enter the 2019 Hoosier Women Artists contest hosted by Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and Treasurer Kelly Mitchell.

Visual art projects such as drawing, painting and photography are welcomed. Work is judged by a panel that includes Crouch, Mitchell and peer artists coordinated by the Indiana Arts Commission.

Winners will have their artwork displayed in Mitchell’s and Crouch’s offices at the Statehouse for one year to be enjoyed by thousands of school groups, visitors and staff who explore the building. Additionally, pieces of art will be selected by First Lady Janet Holcomb, Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Auditor Tera Klutz, Chief Justice Loretta Rush and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick to display in their offices.

One entry per artist will be considered. The maximum weight is 60 pounds, and the piece must be installation ready, including frame and hanging wires. For other requirements, visit the application website.

A reception will take place Wednesday, March 27 at the Statehouse to honor selected artists.

Visit Young Artist Show at art guild now

The Brown County Art Guild is hosting a Young Artist Show through Saturday, Feb. 23, featuring work by local and regional artists younger than 18. An awards ceremony and reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 23; awards will be presented at 3 p.m. at the guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

Guild artist member Dixie Ferrer will judge the competition. Prizes will be awarded for Best of Show ($150), first place ($125), second place ($100), third place ($75), Honorable Mention ($50) and People’s Choice.

The exhibit can be viewed between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and between noon and 4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.

Special exhibit by Hoosier masters at art guild

This month, the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., is hosting “Tri Kappa Comes Home,” an exhibit of guild artist members’ paintings from the Tri Kappa fine art collection. Artists whose work is in the display include C. Curry Bohm, Harry Davis. L.O. Griffith, Ruth K. Hibbs, Georges LaChance, Gordon Mess, Frederick Rigley and others.

Tri Kappa began collecting the works in 1932 and displayed them each year at the guild until the growing collection exceeded the space available, said guild Executive Director Andra Walters. In 1973, the paintings were moved to a library at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.

The exhibit will hang through Sunday, Feb. 24 and will be open during guild winter hours, which are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays, or by appointment.

Free piano concert planned at church Feb. 24

BEAN BLOSSOM — Dario Martin of Cuba and Andreas Ioannides of Cyprus will play romantic piano music at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 at St. David’s Episcopal Church as part of the Bean Blossom Music Series.

The Indiana University doctoral piano performance students will play music by Rachmaninoff, Spanish composers, tangos and other Latin dances.

A meet-the-artists reception will follow.

While the concert is free, donations are welcome.

Blacksmith demonstration, program set at library

A demonstration by blacksmith Jason Nickel and his apprentices will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Brown County Public Library. The demonstration will be followed by a program at 2 p.m.

Traditional Arts Indiana will host the events at the library, 205 Locust Lane; they are free and open to the public. Guests can interact with the artisans while learning more about the TAI apprenticeship program, new Indiana Heritage fellowships, and Hoosier traditional arts practices.

Nickel apprenticed with Monroe County blacksmith Jack Brubaker, becoming lead blacksmith in 2007. He has 30 years of experience “transforming lifeless lumps of metal into beautiful works of art or useful tools,” as expressed by his apprentice, Ansaldo Paolo. Nickel’s other apprentice is Iris Nickel.

Photography club celebrates centennial, hosts exhibit

The Daguerre Club of Indiana will celebrate its 100th anniversary with an exhibit starting the second weekend in March at the Brown County Art Gallery.

An opening night gala and reception will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the gallery, 1 Artist Drive. The event will include music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets cost $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Black and white attire is encouraged.

The centennial exhibit will be open to the public March 10 to 30. The display will be anchored by Nancy Bailey-Pratt’s American Society of Photographers Fellowship prints and surrounded by other Daguerre member displays. Other activities will include workshops and a display of “future masters.”

Founded in 1919, the DCI is the longest continuously functioning camera club in America.

Program on local photography in early 20th century

Jon Kay will give a program on the use of glass-plate photography in the 1900s in Brown County at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10. The program will take place at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Kay will focus on the work of area photographers Frank Hohenberger, Otto Ping, James Whitaker and Benjamin Wallace Douglass, who captured various aspects of Brown County life in the early 20th century.

Kay, of Brown County, is the director of Traditional Arts Indiana, curator of folklife and cultural heritage at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures, and clinical associate professor of folklore and ethnomusicology at Indiana University.

Admission will be $5 at the door.

Photo contest open for historic preservation subjects

The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology is accepting photos for its annual Historic Preservation Month photo contest. It’s looking for photos of something that has been preserved, is in the process of being preserved, or needs to be preserved.

The subject in the photo must be in Indiana and at least 50 years old. It must show something that was designed and/or built. The contest deadline is April 5.

Popular Victorian tea planned in April

The Brown County Art Gallery will serve its annual Victorian tea Sunday, April 14. The theme is “Entertaining with Silver in the Victorian Era.”

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. for shopping with vendors. Tea will be served at 2 p.m., followed by the program. The fundraiser for the gallery foundation will include favors, a raffle and door prizes, as well as contests for “best tea attire” and “best hat.”

Local artist will paint with children in April

In celebration of Earth Day, local artist Patricia Rhoden-Bartels will conduct painting demonstrations at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14.

On Saturday, Rhoden-Bartels will be set up at a vista at the Brown County State Park Nature Center. On Sunday, she will be at the new Singing Winds Visitor Center at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

Children ages 5 to 16 can sign up at the state park office to paint along with Rhoden-Bartels at the Nature Center or to interpret a work by art master T.C. Steele at the historic site. Materials will be provided. She will guide up to 15 kids during each painting session. Setup will begin at 1 p.m.; painting will start at 2 p.m.

The state park entrance fee will apply.

The events are part of Arts In The Parks supported by the Indiana Art Council and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Gallery requests local artists to display work

The Paint Box art gallery, 92 W. Franklin in Antique Alley, is celebrating its 45th year in Nashville. The gallery, on the corner of Jefferson and Franklin, displays a variety of artwork. Artists interested in displaying their work can contact Manager Sherry Barnett at 812-597-0039.

B3 Gallery, in downtown Nashville at 61 W. Main St., is expanding. The owners are seeking artists to display 2-D and 3-D work.

Artists would have a co-op type arrangement but with no work requirements.

Local artist will conduct demonstrations

As part of the Wild Flower Foray celebration, local artist Patricia Rhoden-Bartels will conduct painting demonstrations Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28. The demonstrations are part of Arts In The Parks supported by The Indiana Art Council and Indiana DNR.

On Saturday, Rhoden-Bartels will conduct a sunset painting demonstration at 5 p.m. at Brown County State Park’s Hesitation Point. Set-up will begin at 4 p.m. Naturalist David Mow will provide environmental dialog; the park entrance fee will apply.

On Sunday, Rhoden-Bartels will demonstrate plein air painting at 2 p.m. at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. At  1 p.m., she will set up to paint daffodils or other wildflowers for the demonstration.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”

Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.
