Our Folks Honors: Music students earn awards, Zornes, Ball State dean’s list, Franklin College dean’s list

Local music students earn district awards

COLUMBUS — Several Brown County High School band students participated in the Indiana State School Music Association’s Solo and Ensemble Contest at Columbus East High School on Feb. 4.

BCHS students made 15 solo and three ensemble entries. Six soloists, the trombone trio, saxophone trio, and the brass quintet all earned gold ratings competing in Group I at the district level. Thus, they qualified to compete at the state level Saturday, Feb. 25 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Soloists who earned gold ratings are Josephine Armstrong, Eli deWeerdt, Will Leggins, Shawn Rodgers, Abbie Shaffer and Chase Watson. Brass quintet members are Shawn Rodgers, deWeerdt, Caleb Hayes, Eli Duff and Ethan Hallock. The trombone trio includes Hayes, Watson and Duff. The saxophone trio includes Shaffer, Madi Fry and Jake Rodgers

Destini Arnett, Gabrielle Bethards, Olivia Baughman, Christopher Miller, Nicole Prosch, Jake Rodgers, Tiffany Seagraves and Katie Trapp, competing in Group II, III, or IV, earned seven gold ratings and one silver.

Shawn Rodgers earned a perfect score on his trumpet solo, Alfred Reed’s “Ode to Trumpet.” The brass quintet was only one or two points from a perfect score said BCHS Band Director Nathanael Sudduth.

Quintin Zornes

MUNCIE — Quintin Zornes of Nashville earned a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University after the fall 2016 semester.

Ball State dean’s list

MUNCIE — The fall 2016 dean’s list at Ball State University includes Shane Franklin and Hannah Partridge, both of Morgantown; Kayla Snyder and Kiara Unsworth, both of Nashville; and Alex Morgan of Nineveh.

Dean’s list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Franklin College dean’s list

FRANKLIN — Franklin College named the following students to its dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester:

  • Freshman Matthew T. Redmond, son of David and Melanie Redmond of Nineveh;
  • Sophomore Natalie Marie Strunk, daughter of Julie Clemins of Columbus and Troy Strunk of Nashville;
  • Sophomore Cody Douglas Burker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Burker of Morgantown; and
  • Junior Madison Grace Meador, daughter of Amy Meador of Morgantown.

Dean’s list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
