Program for 21st Century Scholars, parents

COLUMBUS — From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, Ivy Tech will host a program for area high school 21st Century Scholars and parents at the Columbus Learning Center, 4555 Central Ave.

The scholars program offers income-eligible Indiana students up to four years of paid tuition at an Indiana college or university after they graduate from high school.

The event’s goal is to help students maintain eligibility for scholarships and learn more about Ivy Tech, its programs and career pathway opportunities. All high school-aged 21st Century Scholars from Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Jennings and Decatur counties are welcome.

The event at Ivy Tech Columbus will also provide an introduction to the campus; and information about college resources, Ivy Tech programs, and the scholars program requirements and deadlines.

Spring break, summer arts camps available

BLOOMINGTON — Registration is open for a Spring Break Arts Camp and youth summer camps offered through Ivy Tech’s Center for Lifelong Learning. A variety of summer camps are available with morning and afternoon options for ages 4 to 18. Programming runs from March 13 through July.

One camp is taking place at Brown County Intermediate School. Nathan Dillon will lead a music session, Everybody Rocks, for ages 8 to 11, Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 28 to May 2.

Students will learn how to work together to make music with guitars, drums, keyboards, basses and singers. The session’s end is celebrated with a concert to demonstrate improved instrument and team skills. Owning an instrument is helpful but not required. Registration is due by Tuesday, March 21.

Other summer camp offerings in various locations include architectural design, paint, pencil, ceramics, cooking and baking, computer animation, audio editing, drawing and painting, guitar building, theater, rocket launching and more.

A beginning Quick Books class will be offered at the Brown County Career Resource Center depending on community interest. For more information, call the CRC at 812-988-5880.

Volunteer reading tutors sought in schools

The Brown County Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteer tutors to read with elementary school children in the first through third grades. Tutors meet with their student at one of the elementary schools after school from about 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Nursing assistant classes planned

Certified nursing assistant classes are offered periodically at the Brown County Career Resource Center depending on interest. The next class is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 14. Call the CRC at 812-988-5880 for more information or to register.

CRC offers discounts for multiple enrollments

The Brown County Career Resource Center offers discounts for multiple enrollments or for friends who enroll in classes at the same time. The discount does not apply to Ivy Tech classes.

SCI REMC hosts student art contest

All Indiana students in kindergarten through 12th grade can enter the Cooperative Calendar of Student Art Contest, hosted by South Central Indiana REMC. Entries are due by Friday, March 24.

A first-place artist in each grade will receive $200. The artwork of each grade-level winner will illustrate the cover and the 12 months of the calendar. One Artist of the Year will be selected for Best of Show and receive an additional $100. Up to nine additional artists will earn honorable mention awards and receive $50. Honorable mention awards will appear in a special section of the calendar.

Artwork will be judged on artistic merit, originality, creativity and its suitability for a wall calendar.

Sign language classes slated for April

Computer support training certificate offered

A+ Computer Support Specialist Class (A+ Certification) is offered at the Brown County Career Resource Center depending on interest level. Call 812-988-5880 for more information or to register.

Small-business counseling available for free

The Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St., offers individual small-business counseling sessions through the Service Corps of Retired Executives.

There is no charge for the sessions, which meet in the morning on the first Thursday of every month. An appointment is required.

High school equivalency class times set each week

Classes focused on the high school equivalency assessment exam — formerly called GED classes — are taught year-round from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St.

Students who cannot attend then can arrange instruction by appointment or by distance learning.

People enrolled in adult education may be eligible for free job training through Work One.
