Annual student art exhibit hanging until May 6

The Mabel B. Annis Student Art Competition exhibit is on display through Sunday, May 6 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Junior high and senior high school art students from seven counties have competed in drawing, painting, sculpture and photography for prize money. The work of several students from Brown County is included in the show.

See artists at work at state parks, sites

The Indiana Arts Commission has scheduled its Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites programs for 2018. Many of the activities are at sites in Brown County.

Projects were funded to encourage the creation of art and public engagement with art around state parks, the forest system and historic sites.

Joseph Alexander Clancy Clements will lecture on and perform “less common instruments and traditional music in Indiana during the 18th and 19th centuries.” Three programs will take place on Saturdays at T.C. Steele site, May 12, July 14 and Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m.

Textile artist Daren Redman will conduct two fabric-dyeing workshops on Sundays at T.C. Steele State Historic Site. The workshops will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. June 3 and from noon to 4 p.m. July 1.

Visitors can hear Tom Roznowski on vocals and Mike Lucas on piano as they perform The Hoosier Songbook at the T.C. Steele site starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

Focusing on Indiana composers and musicians, Craig Brenner and the Crawdads will explore the blues, boogie-woogie and other music at Brown County State Park. The music will start at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept 1.

Patricia Bartels will present a painting demonstration at the kick-off celebration of the T.C. Steele “painting wagon” at the state historic site from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. This is dependent upon the wagon being completed by this date.

Paula Chambers will perform a lyrical hoop dance, “Falling Leaves,” at the T.C. Steele site from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

“Circus for a Day” with the Hudsucker Posse will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the T.C. Steele site. The troupe will demonstrate all of their props during a short performance and engage the audience afterward.

See work of early, current Indiana printmakers at gallery

A rare exhibit of the Brown County Art Gallery’s entire early Indiana print collection, featuring etchings by L.O. Griffith, Kenneth Reeve, Will Vawter and more, is open through Sunday, May 13 at the corner of East Main Street and Artist Drive.

The collection was recently reframed to museum standards with a grant from the Indiana Historical Society.

In addition, 70 prints of current Hoosier artists will be for sale. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation.

The Indiana Historical Society funded the conservation and framing of 18 rare sketches by Vawter that were used as illustrations for the James Whitcomb Riley poetry books. The sketches, along with original illustrations and a collection of Vawter paintings, will be exhibited as well. The sketches feature people from Brown County in everyday situations.

Florals ‘in bloom’ at art guild during May, June

Special events and a workshop are being planned in conjunction with a free two-month exhibit, “Blooms” at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

“Present Blooms” will feature guild artist member works in florals, from still life to landscape. “Past Blooms” will feature hand-picked selections from the permanent collection.

Dinner theater performances scheduled at inn

Performances of “Tumbleweed: A Town of the Old West” will be presented as dinner theater at Artists Colony Inn.

Shows start at 6 p.m. at the inn, 105 S. Van Buren St. Tickets, $50 per person, include dinner.

Remaining performance dates are Saturdays, May 12 and 19, June 16 and 30, July 28, Aug. 11 and 18, Sept. 1 and 8, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, and Nov. 17.

Weave-in-Spin-in planned May 19 at library

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19 the next Weave-in-Spin-in will be conducted at Brown County Public Library.

Craft gallery anniversary open house slated in May

The Brown County Craft Gallery, 58 E. Main St., will celebrate its 40th anniversary as an artist-owned and run co-op with an open house Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20.

The event will include refreshments at the gallery and artist demonstrations in front of the courthouse from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The following demonstrations are planned: Marla Dawson with a spinning wheel, Jim Halvorson throwing pots, Sue Westhues demonstrating water drums and gourd art, Sidney Bolam carving stone, George Goehl using bubble wands and Michele Pollock with mixed media art.

Art Walk moves to fourth Fridays

The Village Art Walk has moved from second Saturdays to fourth Fridays. The Walk through downtown Nashville galleries this month will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. May 25. The final Walk will be Oct. 26.

The 12 participating galleries include Hoosier Artist, Hereshome, The Emerald Pencil, B3 Gallery, Ascension Fine Arts, Brown County Art Guild, 4th Sister Vintage, Chateau Thomas Winery, Spears Gallery, Brown County Craft Gallery, Trilogy Gallery and the Brown County Art Gallery.

Friday art walks include food, music, wine tasting, demonstrations, paint-alongs and other special art events.

IHA annual exhibit opens in June

The Indiana Heritage Arts 40th annual exhibition and sale opens to the public Saturday, June 9 and runs for 22 days at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive. There is no charge to the public.

The IHA, a nonprofit, encourages artists with Hoosier connections to paint Brown County scenery and its people in the spirit of the traditional early Indiana artists who founded the art colony in the early 1900s.

This year’s judge, Stapleton Kearns, is a New England plein air and studio painter of more than 30 years.

Handmade market in October accepting vendors

The Brown County Handmade Market, Parkview Church’s craft show extravaganza, will be Saturday, Oct. 13 The market will feature a variety of artisans selling one-of-a-kind handmade and upcycled creations, including accessories, home decor, apparel, holiday items, gifts and more.

Vendor applications for handcrafted items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by application date. Booth rent proceeds will benefit the ministries of Parkview Church of the Nazarene.

Hoosier artists sought for America Recycles Day event

COLUMBUS — In celebration of America Recycles Day, Nov. 14, the annual Déjà Vu Art and Fine Craft Show will take place from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at The Commons, a civic space downtown.

Event organizers are seeking professional artists and craftspeople who reuse and/or recycle materials to apply by the Friday, June 15 deadline.

A featured artist to be selected will receive mention in all publicity, a photo of his or her work featured on posters and post cards, free booth space and a complimentary stay Friday, Nov. 9 at the Hotel Indigo downtown.

Drum, guitar lessons for teens offered Tuesdays

Free music lessons are available for area youths ages 12 to 18 at the Brown County Enrichment for Teens Association Inc. (BETA) Center, upstairs at 45 S. Jefferson St.

Free guitar lessons by Nathan Dillon continue from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”
