SCHOOL NEWS: Board approves staff, policy changes

The Brown County School Board of Trustees approved the following on March 28 and April 4:

  • Amending a policy regarding video surveillance and electronic monitoring. It extends the district’s ability to keep surveillance data from security cameras in the schools from 14 days to 30 days. Superintendent Laura Hammack said that when the policy was created, the district wasn’t able to store more than 14 days, but now it can keep data up to 30 days.
  • A donation to the Brown County Intermediate School music department of six littleBits electronic synth kits and two Makey Makey Collectors gift boxes, a grand total of $987.64, from multiple donors, effective March 5. A GoFundMe fundraiser was created by BCIS music teacher Bridget Rinehimer to buy the musical equipment, Hammack said.
  • A temporary pay increase of 75 cents per hour for Brown County High School library assistant Brandi Ireland while she fills in as BCHS attendance secretary.
  • Selling real estate interests to the Indiana Department of Transportation for INDOT’s bridge repair project south of Van Buren Elementary School on State Road 135 South. The district received $1,000 for the small piece of land.
  • The retirement notice of special education teacher David Chastain, effective at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year. This position will not be replaced.
  • The retirement notice of guidance counselor Christina Stoll, effective Dec. 31.
  • Separating Brown County Schools cafeteria worker Jennifer Vaught, effective Feb. 15. This was not a termination.
  • Separating Brown County Junior High School assistant wrestling coach Dave Chastain, effective March 11. This was not a termination.
  • Separating BCJHS assistant cross-country coach Jim McFall, effective March 5. This was not a termination.
  • Separating BCS bus monitor Melanie Bartlett, effective March 13. This was not a termination. Luke Robertson was hired to replace her, part-time without benefits, $10.75 per hour, five hours per day, five days per week, effective March 25.
  • Separating Sprunica Elementary School preschool teacher Daisha Holt, effective at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year. This was not a termination.
  • Separating BCHS boys varsity assistant basketball coach Brandon Carlson, effective March 18. This was not a termination.
  • Appointing BCS bus driver Tracy Brester, $92 per day, full-time with benefits, effective March 25, as is a replacement for Deborah Johnson.
  • Separating BCJHS seventh-grade boys basketball head coach Noah Smyth, effective immediately. This was not a termination.
  • Separating BCJHS seventh-grade volleyball coach Emma Totten, effective immediately. This was not a termination.
  • Appointing BCHS assistant track coach Don Hamrick, Group 10, $745 split stipend, effective March 4. He is a replacement for Richard Gist.
