PET TAILS: At the Barn Sale, everything is new again

Brown County Humane Society volunteers Jeanne Skillman, left, and Kathleen Kersey pose with items from last year’s barn sale. Volunteers are needed for the following dates to help sort, price and stage donations for this year’s sale: July 7, 14 and 21; Aug. 2 through 7.

Second-hand. Gently-used. Formerly-loved. No matter the term, giving a second chance and new life to previously owned items is what the Brown County Humane Society’s Barn Sale is all about.

Each year, the barn sale raises much-needed money to support the animals at the shelter. Thousands of donated items are given a second chance to bring use and value to someone’s life. In return, homeless animals will get their chance for a new life, too.

The furniture donated by the couple that is downsizing might be bought by the newlyweds who are furnishing their first home, and the money from that sale could help pay for the medical care for a sick dog.

The basketball one boy left behind when he went to college could be the start of a new passion for the little girl down the street. The money from that sale could help pay for vaccines for a kitten.

Things no longer needed by one person will be purchased with excitement by another. Everything donated has value, and every purchase creates a second chance for that item and, more importantly, for the animals at the shelter, all of whom are looking for their own second chance.

One person’s unwanted kitten becomes a child’s beloved first pet. Another person’s overly active dog finds a new home with a couple that loves to hike. A stray dog helps bring laughter back to man who hasn’t had much of it in the last couple of years.

Donate to support the community

When you donate your new and gently-used items to the Barn Sale, you will directly support the homeless animals and community programs of the humane society.

BCHS is seeking donations of almost everything from furniture, antiques, collectibles, books, toys, tools, dishes, decorations, rugs, appliances, lamps, records, garden items and more. High-value items like furniture sets, cars, boats and equipment are especially needed. No clothes, shoes, non-working electronics or TV with tubes can be accepted.

Don’t let your valuable space be taken over by things you never use. Give them a second chance and give homeless animals a new life.

Donations can be dropped off at the BCHS barn during the scheduled times. Storage space is limited, but if you are unable to wait to donate, we may be able to arrange early pickup. Contact Sue Ann at 317-727-4134.
