Art gallery receives donations in February

The Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, reached a new agreement with the family of bird artist William Zimmerman which more than tripled the number of pieces on loan to the gallery collection. Many of the paintings have never been exhibited and include Zimmerman’s paintings of animals as well as birds.

New York attorney David Lowden donated an important art colony artifact called the “Emmy Lou Ranch Book.” It is a guest registry created by early art patron Fred Hetherington as a tribute to his wife, Emmy, to record visitors coming to his Brown County cabin starting in 1910. The book contains sketches, paintings, cartoons, notes and more created by the visitors over several years. Hetherington, who was from Indianapolis, bought the cabin after visiting T.C. Steele, who was building his home. Soon, he began inviting members of the Chicago Palette and Chisel Club. In the book are names of those artists who would eventually make up the Hoosier Group and the Brown County Art Colony.
